ThissingleͲmodesurvey(emaildrivingtoanonlineinstrument)ofdentalpracticeswasconductedbythe AmericanAcademyofCosmeticDentistry(AACD)tobetterunderstandthedynamicsofthecosmetic dentistrymarketanddeterminethesizeandimpact(intermsofproceduresandrevenues)andthe patientmakeupofthis market. Previousbenchmarkingsurveyswereconductedin2004,2007,and2011byLevinGroup,Inc.,Readex Research,andAACDrespectively.Dataforthe2013studywascollectedbetweenOctober17and November18,2013.Atotalof659responsesweretabulated,withfewerrespondentscompletingthe latterportionofthe survey.Thenetnumberofrespondentsisnotedoneachexhibit. Previousbenchmarkingsurveyswereconductedin2004,2007,and2011.
CosmeticDentalPracticeDemographics
NinetyͲonepercentofrespondentsidentifiedthemselvesaseitherageneralorcosmeticdentist. (Seepage6) Morethanhalfofthepracticesreporting(51%)havebeeninoperationfor20yearsormore. Since2007,there'sbeenamigrationawayfromsuburbanandruralsettingstomoreurban environments,whichincreased10percentagepointsinthepastsixyears.Still,42%ofcosmetic dentistrypracticesreportthe typeofcommunityinwhichtheyarelocatedassuburban.(See page7) SixtyͲthreepercentofreportingpracticeshavebetween3and9employees.(Seepage8) Nearlyathirdofrespondentsindicatethattheyworkinasolopracticeenvironment,with anotherthirdclaimingaffiliationwithagrouppractice.(Seepage8) Theaveragenumberofdentallaboratoriesused is3.19,anindicationoflabloyaltyconsistent with2011surveyresults."Estheticconsiderations"wasthetopconcern(83%)inselectingwhich dentallaboratorytouse - a4Ͳpointincreasesince2011 - withprocedureorspecialtyat64%. (Seepage9) Findingalabtoworkwithisoverwhelminglydrivenby wordofmouth,with71%reportingthis asthetopwaytolearnoflabreputation.Andmorethan25%reportthattheirprimarylab technicianisanAACDmemberwhile11%patronizeanAACDAccreditedlabtechnician.(See pages10&11)
CosmeticDentistryPatients
Whileit'sclearthattheentiredentalteamisinvolvedininitiatingdialogueaboutcosmetic dentistryandrecommendingprocedures,theinstigationofnewbusinessisoverwhelmingly drivenbythedentist(85%)whilethehygienistseemstobeplayingalargerroleintreatment conversations,jumping17pointssince2011.(See page12) Respondentsindicatedthatdemandforcosmeticdentistryprocedureswasprimarilydrivenby referralsfromotherswhohavehadapositiveexperience(91%)followedbyabigboomer generationwithexpendableincome(78%).(Seepage12) ThreeͲfifthsofcosmeticdentistrypatientswerefemale(60%),twoͲfifths weremale(40%),the sameratioasthe2011survey.(Seepage13) Morethanhalfofpatients(56%),onaverage,arebetweentheagesof31and60.(Seepage13) EightyͲninepercentofpatientselectcosmetictreatmentstoimprovephysicalattractivenessand selfͲesteem.Otherreasons cited:54%saidforrestorativeorhealthreasons(likeaccidentor injury);tofixapreviousfailedcosmetictreatment(51%);andtolookandfeelyounger(50%).

(Seepage16) Respondentswereaskedtoratehowmuchofaconcernvariousissuesare topatientswhen theyconsideracosmeticdentistryprocedure.Definingratingsof4or5asatrueconcern,atthe topofthelistisappearance,indicatedby96%.Indicatedbyfewer,butstillsubstantial majorities,arecost(85%)andlongevityoftreatmentresults(79%).(Seepage17)
CosmeticDentistryinDollarsandCents
Whenaskedtoindicatetheirpractice'saverageproductionperscheduledcosmeticdentistry patientvisitinthepastyear,morethanoneͲthirdofrespondents(36%)indicatedthehighest categoryavailableonthesurvey:$2,500ormore,an11Ͳpointjumpinsince2011.(Seepage18) Whenaskedto indicatehowmuchtheaveragecosmeticdentistrypatientspentonservicesat theirpracticesinthepastyear,acombined48%selectedthetopfivetiersavailableinthe survey($2,500to$20,000+)upthreepointssince2011.(Seepage18) SeventyͲninepercentofpracticesindicatedtheyoffered theircosmeticdentistrypatientsthirdͲ partyexternalfinancingservicesinthepastyear,anincreaseoftwopointssincethe2011 survey.Andofthoseofferingfinancing,79%ofrespondentsreportedthatthirdͲpartyfinancing optionshelpedpatientsgettoa"yes"decision.(Seepage19) Whenaskedhow mostpatientsfindthem,88%ofrespondentsreportthatpatientsfindthem viawordofmouthandInternetsearch,withWOMleadingthewaybyawidemargin(63%). And,while22%ofpracticesdonotengageinanyformofsocialmedia,75%useFacebookand
27%areonTwitter.
