q Lead azide is highly sensitive explosive and hence stored under water in insulated rubber containers. q About 1885 Paul Vieille invented a smokeless powder known as poudre B and was made from nitrocotton and ether-alcohol. q Just in the USA and Canada, 6 Billion pounds of explosives and 75 million detonators are used per year. q The first powder mill in the US was constructed in Milton, Mass. q Scientist recommends storing picric acid in bottles under a layer of water because of the sensitivity of dry picric acid towards shock and friction. q In the early 20th century, picric acid was stocked in pharmacies as an antiseptic and as a treatment for burns, malaria, herpes, and smallpox. q Picric Acid was most notably used for the treatment of burns suffered by victims of the Hindenburg disaster in 1937.
