skills necessary to enter into a complex and changing global society with confidence and competence.

Assessment Plan

(These are mechanisms by which the Health Science Department supports students in achieving outcomes) Anatomy and Physiology - Students demonstrate general knowledge in human anatomy and physiology in both healthy and disease states All Health Science students are introduced to the science of the human body immediately upon their arrival at Lock Haven University. Freshman are required to enroll in a two- semester course series that introduces them to the fundamental concepts of human anatomy and physiology. Over the course of their academic career, students explore health from the human perspective, a feature unique to the Lock Haven University Health Science Department. Advanced coursework exploring the human body in both healthy and diseased states including a human cadaver dissection course during their senior year. Critical Thinking - Students develop and apply critical thinking skills Development of critical thinking skills is important from an academic perspective as well as a professional skill that is highly desired in the modern workplace. The Department of Health Science offers a variety of courses designed to assist students with developing and applying critical thinking skills from a health perspective. Professional Communication - Students will demonstrate communication, personal, and interpersonal skills necessary for entry level health professionals Students of the Health Science Department have an opportunity to develop and apply skills in professional communication and interpersonal skills in the context of a professional field experience. Students enrolled in HLTH485: Professional Field Experience are required to shadow an professional in their chosen field for 40 to 120 hours. During this time, they interact with other health professionals, facility staff, patients, and families in order to gain valuable experience in the personal and professional interactions within a healthcare facility. Professional Writing - Students will demonstrate the ability to access and interpret the professional literature in health care professions and communicate effectively in writing. All students in the Health Science Department are required to complete courses that consist of intensive writing exercises. Most students complete a research project on a topic of their choice within the context of a professional experience as part of that requirement. Student persistence - First time freshman that matriculate into the Health Science Department will persist in the major and graduate within 4 years. The Department of Health Science offers several solutions to helping students transition successfully from the high school experience to the expectations at the collegiate level. A course specifically designed to: assist students with development of study skills, orient students to LHU resources, and connect students with Health Science faculty. The faculty of the Health Science Department provide consistent academic advising to all students and strive to create an environment for students that is supportive and encouraging. Graduate school admission - Students graduating with a BS in Health Science will meet graduate school admission requirements. The goal of the Health Science Department is to assist all students with meeting the minimum requirements for their chosen graduate school program. The tracks within the Health Science Department are carefully structured to meet requirements for a broad range of programs will still providing flexibility for students to transition between tracks. During their time at LHU, students work closely with their academic advisor to complete curricular requirements and extracurricular experiences that will enhance their application to graduate programs and make them competitive applicants. First Year Student Seminar - Freshmen entering the Department of Health Science will connect with the University and the Department as well as develop the skills necessary to be a successful college student. Designed to introduce students to the culture and mission of the university within the context of Health Science. Students are introduced to: learning strategies, study skills, time management skills, and opportunities for development across campus. This course is also designed to help students form connections to with fellow students, faculty, university and the community.
