ABSTRACT

Strong neighbor relations between Georgia and Turkey have allowed for many interactions to be intensely

experienced and maintained in language and culture just as in many areas. The effective communication

that both countries established with e ach other during the histor ical process has refle cted on th eir

vocabulary and enabled thousands of common words to take place in both languages. This interaction continuing between t he two communitie s has be come even stron ger today and th e demand t o learn

Turkish and Georgian has extremely increased. To this end, in this study it is aimed to determine the words

used commonly in Turkish and Georgian in order to enable either Turkish learners or Georgian learners to

be better motivated in language acquisition and take the researches for the field a step further. By means

of document analysis method many sources were reviewed and thereby a lot of words used commonly in

both languages were found. Besides, the study also comprises the changes in the Georgian dialect, which

is used in the Adjarian region, an autonomous republic of Georgia, but not used in official Georgian and

some field researches to determine this have also partly been done. Accordingly, thousands of common

words are found between Turkish and Georgian, but most of these are of Adjarian dialect of Georgian. In

this context, just as the dimensions of the reflection of differences such as language, culture, geography,

etc. among the regions specific to Georgia on language are understood, the power of the relationship

INTRODUCTION

The demand to learn Turkish has increased all around the world thanks to Turkey rising as an attraction center in many areas of activity such as culture, art, tourism and education, its active role in international work sites, its intercontinental position, havi ng a deep history and cultural bonds with differen t countries , and offering individuals new opportun and Gültekin, 2017). As a natural consequence of this demand, the studies for teaching Turkish as a foreign language is increasing day by d ay and it is ris ing in all a reas, mainly i n course materials. This not only allows for language acquisition

but als o forms a basis for the int eraction and communication of the indi vidual s living in different countries. It is cle arly see n that these stu dies will

increase each passing day in the future (Nurlu, 2019). In this context, the need for taking the language acquisition with all its aspects creates the necessity for the learners to reveal the aspects of the interactions, historical and cultural, existing between their na tive language an d target langu age. The fact that th e learners know the interaction between the two languages or aspects of the borrowing, similari ties or differences can contribu te t o their language acquisiti on. of language teaching to know the relationship between theirnative language and the target language. As a matter of fact, facilities of teachers can not be limit ed wit h the correct inf ormation transferred by the teachers to the students. At the same time, they should be versatile in a way to be effective and motivate the students and provide the fastest way for language acquisition. For this reason, teachers should know properties like phon etics and semantics of both their native language and the learners' language. Indeed, as Onan (2014) stated, the role of a language in perceptional process is a multiple and very complicated issue. Thus, in the studies to be conducted on languages it is important to know the structural system of the relevant language. In this context, the meaning and functions of the wo rds cons tituting the structu re of a language and the contexts they are u sed play an important role in terms of revealing a commu nicational objective (Dilidüzgün, 2017). In this regard, it is of great importance for teachers to a dequately know t he poi nts regarding the lea rners' lan guage in terms o f achieving language acquisition besides having a good grasp of the vocabulary of their native language. Indeed, as stated by (2019), in a lang uage the words borrow ed from other languages due to many reasons are regarded as the richness of that language. Therefore, in the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language, knowledge of the points regarding the learners' native language and its use in the educational process by th e teachers wil l be advantageous in achieving the language acquisition. As a matter of fact, in language teaching motivation has both internal and external factors. Teacher or tutor is the most important external factor Koçer, 2014). Thus, knowledge of the co ncepts or the poi nts regarding th e vocabulary of the learners' language by the teachers will provide the motivation of the learners. To this end, in this study it is aimed to find out the common words between Georgian and Turkish in order to support the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language. The study is considered important for revealing the power of the bonds between the languages, cultures and nations and transferring this to ne w generat ions not only because it sup ports t he teaching of Turkish but also the teaching of Georgian to the Turkish people.

METHOD

Research design

The study aims to determine the words used commonly in Turkish and Georgian in order to make the teaching of Turkish to the Georgians easier as a foreign language. Within this g eneral obje ctive, it also aims to facilitate language acquisiti on and motivate the st udents f or the target language. Indeed, with this study it is believed that especially the teachers will increase prelearning in regard Abukan and Chkonia 291 to th e words o f both lan guages . This wil l in return motivate the learn ers while transfer is prov ided during teaching and provide language learning in a fast manner. Moreover, it is thought that it is also important for the teachers to know the d imension s of the regional differences specific to Georgia. Thus, the s tudy conducted in this regard does not have an aim to teach the words based on rote-learning. However, this study is supposed to be useful in terms of providing the students with prelearning about the similar or common words in the target langu age. In the context o f all these po ints, although it is st ated t hat th e study is arrang ed as a research required to be utilized in teaching Turkish to the Georgians, it is predicted that it will be a study also to be utilized either f or teachers or f or stud ents in teachin g Georgian to the Turkish learners. Still, the main aim of the stu dy is to fa cilita te the teaching of Turkish to the

Georgians as a foreign language.

In the study, any structural determination could not be done regarding the developmental or changing stages of the words. There is not any study encountered indicating by means of which language the words are transferred to Georgian. Indeed, the study does not have such an aim, either. However, etymology of the words is found. In this way, it is aim ed to eliminate th e ques tion marks of students regarding the etymology of the words used commonly in both languages during Turkish teaching. In this context, in orde r to col lect data eithe r Turkish- Georgian words or English-Georgian words are searched in the study. Document analysis, one of the qualitative methods, is used. This method invol ves the sca n and analysis of the written sources t hat can provide information about the s ubject aimed to be ex amined. According to th is rese arch method, researchers ob tain the necessary data by means of documents and evaluate the same by considering various parameters. Indeed, in this stud y documents related to the subject are also reviewed and the research d ata, nam ely the common words betw een the two lang uages are obtaine d. Moreover, especial ly in order to find o ut the common words used in Adjaria n regio n, Descriptive Anal ysis method is also used. According to this method, based on the conceptual framework of the research, or the aspects in ob servation or interview, a fra mework is formed for data anal ysis. Afterwards, analysis of data obtai ned according to this framework is done. In this regard, due to the lack of som e words inte nsively used in Adjarian dialect of Georg ian in the dictionaries, throug h many concepts such as fruit na mes, re lationship names in Adjarian region information regarding both Adjarian dialect and off icial Ge orgian is tried to be determined. Besides, the students are asked to submit the words that they can find o r learn from thei r environmen t to the researchers. Thus, the data or the words are evaluated by co nsulting with the sp ecialists w ho know b oth languages very well and recorded in this way and

Data collection and analysis

In th e study, the determina tion of the words used commonly in Turkish and Georgian is provided either by means of source analysis or by obtaining the data aurally and recording the same. To this end, many studies and sources, mainly the researches on common words and borrowings by Küçük and Rukhadze and Katcharava (2006) are rev iewed. The

(2010) are also reviewed and the words are obtained in a comparative way. Moreover, numerous Georgian dictionaries and sources for dialect researches produced with the contributi ons of many Georgian autho rs or researchers such as Kvantaliani (2010), Çlaidze (2001), (2016), (1960), Awde and (1997), Nijaradze (1971), Corbenadze (1989) and Gurgenidze (2016) are also reviewed and common words are tri ed to be f ound. Thus, for Georgian word s the Explanatory Dictionary of the Georgian Language (1983,

2008) is taken as a basis. Besides, there are also some

words found which are used in Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Georgia and not encountered in the studies by Nijaradze (1971) and Gurgenidze (2016) on Adjarian dialect comprising many common words with Turkish. For this reason, the words supplied either by the researchers or to the researchers by the academic staff, students and individuals of different occupational groups are recorded. In this way, process of data collection which is obtained either from the sources or recorded aurally is completed. In the analysis of this data, the academicians who live in the Adja rian region of Ge orgia and hav e a gra sp of official Georgian , Adjarian Georgian and Turkish, and conducted studies on these areas are consulted, and the presence of this data in dictionaries is controlled. However, it is d etermi ned th at some words are not included in official Georgian and have an area of usage only in Adjaria n dialect of Geo rgian. Therefore, i t is necessary to indicate in what way the words obtained are included both in Adjarian G eorgian and in official Georgian in this study. Accordingly, in the study a title is opened both for the words used commonly in Turkish and

Georgian and for the words used commonly in

Autonomous Republic of Adjara and the words found are determined. However, it is seen that the words used in Adjarian dialec t can also vary from region to region. These region al differences in Adjarian dialect are no t included in the study, though. Besides, alth ough partly Turkish Dictionary (2011) is consulted for the etymology, the meaning of the words i n the st udy, online Current Turkish Dictio nary of Turkish Lan guage Association (2020) is taken as a basis. Still, different dictionaries are also utilized for the words not included in Current Turkish Afr Educ Res J 292 Dictionary (2020). M oreover, in order to determ ine the origin of th e words , (online ) etymology di ctionaries (2020) are utilized and their etymology is shown in brackets. For the words det ermined accordingly and f or the aff ixed or compound words: Tr (Turkish), Ar (Arabic), Fa (Persian), Ka (Georgian), Mn (Mongolian) abbreviations are used. Apart from the aff ixed use of Turkish words, any abbreviation is not applied for the words of Turkish origin.

FINDINGS

In this research, it is aimed to determine the words used commonly in Turk ish an d Georgian. In this way, in teaching of Turkish as a foreign language, thanks to the determination of the common words, it is aimed to make Turkish learne rs more motivate d in the language, facilitate their language acquisitio n and indicate how much the interactions between the two languages exist, make the teachers' work easier during teaching, provide an in sight about the dimension of the rela tionship between the two languag es in ge neral. Due to the numerous words used commonly in the study, the words transferred from the western languages are not included in this study. Thus, the findings section is limited. As a matter of fact, most of the differences among the Adjarian Georgian, Turkish and official Georgian come from words out of the western languages. Besides, in addition to the words used commonly, the words used with various Georgian additions or derivations are not included in the study, however, some of these words are mentioned at the end of the study. All t he sam e, the w ords like "zenginlik (richness)", " which are used with Turkish derivational morphemes are included in the study. As a result, in line with the data obtained, many common words are found, mainly the words of Turkish, Arabic and Persian origin, in both languages. The results of th is are indi cated i n Table 1. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

In th is study, i t is aimed t o determine the words used commonly in Turkish and Georgian in order to contribute to the teaching of both languages as a foreign language. In th e preparat ion stage of the stu dy, it is aim ed to conduct a stu dy for al l of the common words in both languages. However, the num erous comm on words caused the s tudy to b e limited only wi th the words transferred from the language s, mainl y Turkish, Arabic and Persian, except for the western languages.
