WHAT IS TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE?
Translational medicine is a discipline aiming to: Accelerate the discovery and development of new diagnosis and treatment methods, Accelerate the transition from R&D to clinical application with an understanding of inter- disciplinary collaboration and cooperation, Assure integration of new methods to health protocols in a way to create a social impact.
Translational research can be carried out as guided basic research towards meeting clinical needs or
as evaluation and identification of knowledge accumulated from basic research for application in
clinical fields. Both kinds of research require communication of researcher from different disciplines
and knowledge transfer between disciplines. Translational research involves 5 stages: Description Research type T0
Exploring opportunities and possibilities
towards diagnosis and treatment of diseases
Basic research, experimental development. (Basic
sciences, Engineering sciences, Basic medical sciences)
T1 Identifying candidate clinical applications. Proof of concept studies, Phase 1 clinical studies.
T2 Developing evidence-based clinical
applications Phase 2-3 clinical studies, method development.
T3 Transforming clinical applications to
medical methods. Phase 4 clinical studies, clinical outcome studies.
T4 Determining the social impact of new
methods. Population-level outcome studies. AYBm TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE EDUCATION and RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE AYBm Translational Medicine MSc and PhD programs operate with an interdisciplinary education and R&D and are open to all students who have graduated from the life sciences, basic sciences, and engineering programs. We aim to provide the students with the knowledge and skills for: - Interpreting data from basic research and evaluate the potential to be used in clinic, - Planning and carrying out basic and clinical research - Associating knowledge from basic research with clinical problems
The staff of Translational Medicine consists of 6 professors, 4 associate professors and 6 assistant
professors from Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering and Vocational education. M.D. faculty
consist of 1 Clinical Biochemistry specialist, 1 Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases specialist, and 1
Oncology specialist. Faculty from engineering departments consist of Biomedical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering (Biomechanics), and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The laboratory infrastructure for Translational Research at AYBm consist of AYBm Central Research Laboratory Research and Application center (MERLAB), Medical School Laboratories and Biomedical
Engineering Department Laboratories.
ERASMUS program at AYBm is one of the best programs in the country and our students can participate
in the program. The students have the opportunity to conduct part of their doctoral studies abroad by
participating in the program. In addition, the students can participate in the domestic or abroad student exchange programs and benefit from the discounted service fees provided by the cooperation protocols of MERLAB.
