Epidemiologist 1 (EPI1) Vacancy Announcement

Location: Nashville, Tennessee

Salary based on education and experience with a starting rate of $5,222 per month

Position Description:

This Epidemiologist 1 position is located with the Emergency Preparedness (EP) program of the Tennessee

Department of Health, which is federally funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

(CDC) Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) cooperative agreement. This position serves as an all

-hazards support epidemiologist in the program and will be responsible for providing support and capacity

across a broad spectrum of program needs including syndromic surveillance, infectious disease preparedness and response, data visualization, report writing, presentation, emergency preparedness activities, and grant management. A well-matched candidate will have experience working in local or state public health, emergency

preparedness, syndromic surveillance, communicable diseases, and data visualization software such as

Tableau. Good candidates will also have excellent

communication skills (written and verbal) and be a well- organized, detail-oriented problem solver able to complete and coordinate complex projects. This position will allow for 20 to 40% remote work, however during an emergency response additional time in the office
may be required to staff the State Health Operations Center.

Job Responsibilities:

Support data visualization needs in the Emergency Preparedness program utilizing Tableau® and other data visualization software as needed, including the following tasks o Develop, deploy, and maintain public facing reportable disease dashboards using archived surveillance data o Create data visualizations aligning with programmatic aesthetics during emergency responses and exercises o Provide data visualization support and training for PHEP epidemiologists in metro and regional health departments o Prepare data outside of Tableau using R, SAS, or other statistical programming languages Support the syndromic surveillance program o Administrate TN ESSENCE and National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP) User

Accounts

o Work with the syndromic surveillance team to develop queries and reports to support syndromic surveillance efforts such as ad hoc queries in response to events and monitoring needs in other programs Support the Emergency Preparedness program o Develop and document a responder health and safety monitoring plan that makes use of CDC/NIOSH's ERHMS Info Manager o Review and update TDH CASPER materials and plans o Develop and maintain a catalogue of emergency preparedness/disaster epidemiology

resources available from CDC, CSTE, and other jurisdictions o Provide epidemiologic support and analytic capacity during emergency responses,

events, and exercises Support grant applications and grant reporting Support data collection, survey design, and other analytic needs in the Emergency Preparedness program using REDCap® Support training and data visualization requests for PHEP interns and fellows Represent the Emergency Preparedness program within the division through hosting meetings and presenting on Emergency

Preparedness related topics

Statistical programming proficiency in SAS and/or R is desirable but not required for this position.

This position will be responsible for reporting for duty as soon as possible, including after hours,

during emergencies as part of coordinated responses by TDH.

Qualifications:

Minimum

Qualifications: Education and Experience: The minimum qualifications for this level will be a

master"s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics. Degree must

be from an accredited college or university. OR

Substitution of Experience for Education: A master"s degree in a health science, biomedical science or

environmental science field with two years" work experience in epidemiology. Degree must be from an accredited college or university.
