SERVICE

Perform routine work to the highest standards, as determined by the Laboratory

Management Team.

Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information. Ensure that all samples are processed in accordance with standard operating procedures. Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with

Hospital policy.

Ensure that policy relating to the Pathology Laboratory record keeping is followed. Actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance programmes. In co-operation with the Consultant, Chief Medical Scientist in Immunology and other designated senior staff, participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital policy. Co-operate in evaluating assays, equipment, consumable items and research projects where required. Participate as required in the provision of appropriate statistical and management information. Participate as required in developing the laboratory information system for the Department. Participate in the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents or multiple trauma according to Laboratory Management Team policy.

Participate with the Chief Medical Scientist in facilitating the training of students from

relevant college courses. Participate in and promote continuing education and research activities

The appointment is: Wholetime, Permanent & Temporary and Pensionable

The Tissue Establishment is the unit of the hospital where activities of processing, preservation, storage or distribution of human tissues and cells are undertaken. The Stem Cell laboratory and the Cryobiology Storage Facility are located in pathology.

Overview of the Department of Haematology:

7OH GHSMUPPHQP RI +MHPMPRORJ\ MP 6PB 9LQŃHQPȇV 8QLYHUVLP\ +RVSLPMO performs a large range of tests,

both routine and specialised, for this hospital and the hospitals in the local region. The Department

provides specialised testing in Coagulation, Immunophenotyping and Stem cell enumeration. There are four consultants Haematologists treating an ever expanding range of Haematology conditions.

The department is involved in the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students in

Biomedical science. Haematology staff are encouraged and supported to engage in further

education and training including MSc courses. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is

facilitated by attending hospital seminars/meetings and conferences. There is a Haematology

Journal Club every Friday from September to June.

The post-holder will join the Department of Haematology at a time of exciting developments.

Current plans include the replacement of the Haematology and Coagulation analysers to more

modern technologies including Digital morphology. Other areas include the expansion of the

Immunophenotyping service and support for the Tissue Establishment Stem cell program. Within the next few years there is the planned move of the National Maternity Hospital on site and to amalgamate the Laboratory services.

Overview of the Clinical Chemistry Department

Clinical Chemistry is a Chemical Pathologist lead department with great emphasis on developing the

VHUYLŃH PR ILP POH SMPLHQPȇV QHHGVB ΖP LV M G\QMPLŃ GHSMUPment with a wealth of experience amongst its

staff. Teamwork is essential to the smooth operation of the department and the successful Medical

Scientist would join a group of dedicated staff.

The Clinical Chemistry Departments serves a very busy Emergency and Intensive Care Departments with rapid turnaround times required for urgent patient care. Routinely we cater for upwards of

2000 samples a day from in-house wards and clinics to outlying hospitals and General Practice

samples. A wide range of assays are performed on the Roche tracked platform currently consisting on pre- analytics, chemistry and immunoassay analyzers. This platform is due for upgrade shortly to a new state-of-the-art solution. The assays provided by the department vary from routine chemistry ISE

and photometric assays to TDM, Specialised Proteins, Tumor Markers, Haematinics and Thyroid

Function Tests add an interesting aspect to the working day. The department is also a specialized

centre for Bone Markers, Electrophoresis, HbA1c, Haemochromotosis and other esoteric chemistry markers.

Individuals who qualified before the 31st March 2019 and have been engaged in the practice of the profession in the Republic of Ireland for a minimum of 2 years full time (or an aggregate of 2 years full time), between 31st March 2014 and 30th March 2019 must: (a) Hold a qualification recognised by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU see https://www.coru.ie/about-us/registration-boards/medical-scientists-registration- board/apply-for-registration/ Or (a) Hold a qualification previously recognised by the Department of Health (An Roinn Slainte)2. And (b) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

2. Registration on the Medical Scientists register

Category A and category B

Appointees who subsequently fail to achieve the necessary registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU will not be able to continue in the role of a Medical Scientist beyond the 30th March 2021.

Category C

Appointees must have applied for registration with CORU by the 30th March 2021 to continue in the role of a Medical Scientist beyond the 30th March 2021.

3. Annual registration

On appointment, practitioners must main live annual registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

4. Health

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and effiecient service.

5. Character
