1 The studies below are the results of two decades patiently studying coins excavated and found in the heartland of the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem. Also in my case (1572-1631) observation applies, and I owe a considerable number of persons and institutions my heartfelt thanks for their help and support. First of all, I owe a great debt of gratitude to my teachers and supervisors, emeritissimi ichael David Metcalf of the Ashmolean, Oxford University. The first trained me to be a medieval historian, and always to think innovative and critically. The second taught me the subtleties of medieval coins, not just objects for dating archaeological phases but complex, multi-faceted historical documents.
