LONDON FORCES
(DISPERSION FORCES) Thesearisefromtemporaryvariationsinelectrondensityinatomsandmolecules.At anyinstant,theelectrondistributionmaybeunsymmetricalandhenceproducean instantaneousdipole.Thiscancauseaninducedtransientdipoleintheneighboring moleculeandcausethemoleculestobeattracted. TheLondondispersionforceistheweakestintermolecularforce.TheLondon dispersionforceisatemporaryattractiveforcethatresultswhentheelectronsin twoadjacentatomsoccupypositionsthatmaketheatomsformtemporarydipoles. Thisforceissometimescalledaninduceddipoleinduceddipoleattraction.London forcesaretheattractiveforcesthatcausenonpolarsubstancestocondenseto liquidsandtofreezeintosolidswhenthetemperatureisloweredsufficiently.
