Atoms of different elements can combine: for example, a carbon (C) atom can combine with two oxygen (O) atoms to form carbon dioxide (CO2) Carbon dioxide is

Way Smaller than Small!

Wow, atoms are so small

that millions can fit across a period!

Small Size ² BIG Numbers!

If the water molecules were $600,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 dollars, and you spent $1 million every second, it would take about 20 billion years to spend it all! www.acs.org/kids © American Chemical Society, 2017

Now you know that atoms are really small and that there are huge numbers of them, but here are a few other atom facts you might find interesting.

These Numbers are Astronomical!

Believe it or not, the atoms on Earth, including the ones in you and everything around you, came from outer space. Some atoms came from the original Big Bang that created the universe, but most came from exploding and colliding stars. www.acs.org/kids © American Chemical Society, 2017
