The Nile River is the longest river in the

world, it is 6 600km long. It͛s source is in

Lake Victoria and it runs through various

countries in Africa (Sudan, Ethiopia, South

Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi)

and eventually has its mouth in the

Mediterranean Sea. It has two main

tributaries: White Nile and Blue Nile.

The first people to settle at the Nile was

5000 years ago. We are currently living in

the year 2020 CE (AD), so the first Egyptians would have settled in the year 3000 BCE (BC)

Ancient Egyptians were able to grow a

variety of foods because of the rich soil that the Nile River produced. They grew the following foods: wheat, barley, vegetables, figs, melons, pomegranates and grapes. They also grew flax which was made into linen. The most important crop was grain. The ancient Egyptians used grain to make bread, porridge and beer. Hieroglyphics is a type of writing that uses pictures for letters. The Ancient Egyptians spoke Egyptian language and

the languages and writing changed over the years. Today modern Egyptians can speak mostly English or Arabic. They

can also write in the English language or Arabic. A stone called the Rosetta Stone was discovered. The stone had the

same short story written on it in three types of writing. They were Greek, Demotic script, and hieroglyphs. Scientists

How papyrus is made

*The papyrus plant is a reed that grows in marshy areas around the Nile river.

*The inside of the triangular stalk was peeled into long strips. These strips were then laid out in two layers,

one horizontal and one vertical, and pressed and dried to form a papyrus sheet.

*Finally, many of these sheets were then joined end-to-end to form a roll. No glue was required; instead,

the natural gum of the plant held the sheets together.

*Scribes used pens made of reed tips that were dipped in black ink (ink was made from ash).
