How do you teach time zones?

Depending on the grade level, let students use the internet or a printed map to figure out the time around the world, or look it up together and complete the first part as a class. The second sheet gives students practice word problems with time. Make learning about time zones fun by incorporating hockey!

What are time zones based on?

Time zones are based on the fact that the Earth moves 15 degrees longitude each hour. Since there are 24 hours in a day there are 24 standard time zones on the globe. (24 hours x 15º = 360º) Time zones are counted from the Prime Meridian (0º longitude). Each time zone is counted at 15 º intervals and extends 7½º either side of a central meridian.

What is the Microsoft time zone database?

Many time zones observe daylight savings time; so a certain offset for a time zone can change depending on the time of the year. The Microsoft Time Zone Database is built in the Windows Operating System and is easy to consume from Win32 APIs of .NET Framework. Updates to this database are deployed automatically through Windows Update [1].

Why do I need to set the time zone setting?

This setting will be used for some time-based functions such as firewall. You must specify your time zone once you login to the router successfully, or else, the time limited on these functions will not take effect.
