Although known since antiquity, glass
is used very little for the conservation and tr ansportation of wine. It is too rare and too ex pensiv e. Under LouisXIV the bottle is even prohibited and
only allowed for retail sales and to be used as a pitcher. B ut where asBurgundies, clarets and ports travelled
easily in casks, Champagne could not be transported in bulk. Since it sparkles, according to Watriquet de Couvin in 1320 in his Dit des trois Dames de Paris : "Fine, clear wine which tingles on the tongue,"Champagne wine is only imaginable in
a bottle. Born of fermentation in a sealed receptacle, this already prestigi ous wine can only be transported in a thick bottle. Very fashionable at the court ofLouis XV, champagne is the subject of
a 1728 Council of State decree which authorises its transportation and export. While still wines continue to be sold in barre ls, c hampagne becomes widespread on all the best table s inFrance and Europe in bot tles which
are... naked. In order to inform new consumers about
this magic wine, a start is made by placing on the bottles, from the middle of the 18th centur y on, hand-wri tten labels (in French étiquettes) on which the village, the region and less frequently the year are written. When the AustrianSenefelder invents lithographyin 1799
the cost of the label becomes accessible and large series can be printed. The name of the producer appears next to details of origin and the notion o f a brand is born. A synonym of the word brand, moreover, is imprint or impression. It is thus clear that the label gave rise
to the brand. With developments in technology, under
Napoleon III multi-coloured printing
becomes possible. Labels are now gaudy and over the top. Many fanciful names are added : Extra Cuvée Supérieure,Grand Vin de la Célébration, Cuvée des
Deux Mondes...

Carte d'Or label appears. The Appellation
is already well regulated but what must be included is minimal :Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée : CHAMPAGNE
Brand : André DRAPPIER
Address : URVILLE
Professionnal number : R.M.12.153
We have t o wait until 1972 for the
contents of 78cl, later 75cl to appear, after adoption of the European norms. And in 1988 the amount of alcohol is
imposed. 1985 is t he year of a big change : André dis appears ! No, rest assured, not the propr ietor, still t he family patr iarch today. No, only the first name has to disappear from the label because the brand is making its debut on the American mar ket and over there a dubious fizzy wine wrongly termed Champagne is called "André".To avoid any negative associations the
first name is withdrawn from the label but the man himself rem ains very much in command. The brand becomes more easily identifiable, the DRAPPIER house takes to the international stage and one sees the label on the best tables in New Yor k, To kyo or Sy dney.Ever more elegan t, the packa ging
retains its yellow colour to evoke a rare yellow fruit : the quince, aromas of which sommeliers uncover in the Carte d'Or cuvée. It is exactly 60 years since the launch o f this Brut, which we recommend to you in its refi ned version, still true to its colours but in the spirit of the times showing mo re respect for the environment.A MATTER OF ETIQUETTE
According to Voltaire the word étiquette
has three senses. Firstly it is the paper label which is attached to a product, it is also the political colour attributed to a person and finally it is the discourse or protocol which regulates the ceremonies and the grand moments in life. As far as the piece of paper is concerned, we have more to say on this. On political etiquette, no comment ; there will be enough elections inAmerica, western and eastern Europe
for the candidates to console themselves in defeat or celebrate victory withChampagne. And as for etiquette in the
ceremonial sense, it is more sober in the 21st century but does not exclude elegance, firstly in the women and men who taste this precious wine, and in champagne itself, the object of all our passion.Epicureans have always said : "Pleasure needs to be learned." As fruits of nature the grape and wine will always retain a
measure of mystery but we can keep refining our pleasure by enriching our knowledge. New information will thus appear on
your labels from now on.Appellation
