Andrews, Professor of English, University of North Carolina Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841 and Rescued in 1853 (to be referred to as Twelve Years a Slave) is the focus of this lesson on analyzing messages in slave narratives.
What was the purpose of a slave narrative?
Slave narratives had a mission: to convert readers’ hearts and minds to the antislavery cause by revealing how slavery undermined and perverted the principal institutions upon which America was founded: representative democracy, Protestant Christianity, capitalism, and marriage and the family.
What rights did the slaves have?
The slaves lost their right to be free, to enjoy the fruits of their labor, sometimes to choose their spouses, to keep their families intact and see their children grow up, to choose their profession, and, for the women, to choose their sexual partners.
What happened to the slave masters?
The slave masters may have profited financially but they suffered personally becoming hypocrites (Mr. Ford), becoming callous to the suffering of others (all of the plantation owners and overseers, including the Fords, the Epps, Chapin and Tibbeats) or by becoming a torturer and abuser of their fellow human beings (Epps and Tibbeats).

Fugitive Slave Act triggered a lucrative underground kidnapping industry that capitalizedon the inferior social status of free as well as enslaved blacks. The law made it legal for any white
person to claim any black person as a fugitive slave, with the burden of proof resting on th e captive.Since a black person could not testify against a white person in all Southern states, a kidnap victim
would have no way to prosecute the person - usually white - who kidnapped them. This removed a major obstacle for kidnappers. 2 : How did the fact that cotton became a hugely profitable crop during the antebellum period relate toSolomon Northup's kidnapping?
Answer: Within ten years of the invention of the cotton gin in 1807, cultivation of cotton became highly
profitable and the major crop in the United States. The success of this plantation crop increased the demand for slave labor in the cotton - growing regions of the Deep South. Legal: The Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 triggered the development of a vast underground industry trafficking in human beings that took full advantage of the inferior legal status of free and enslaved blacks.
