ȼShow students example of Piet

Mondrian"s

Composition in Red,

Blue, and Yellow.

Discuss how he

used lines, vertical, horizontal, and how they created shapes, square and rectangle.

ȼDemonstrate how to arrange the

black paper lines on the square paper. Some can overlap but some will need to be cut if they hang ofi the page. Show students how to cut if they are too long.

ȼOnce they are happy with their

arrangement of lines show them how to glue the lines down. “A dot is a lot."

Phase 2

ȼReview Mondrian"s Composition

in Red, Blue, and Yellow , from Day 1.

ȼIntroduce primary colors. Look at

Mondrian"s Composition Red, blue

and Yellow . “What colors do you see? Why do you think he chose those colors? Would you choose the same colors? Why or why not?"

ȼDemonstrate how to paint the

line collage in the style of Mondri an. Show students how to properly clean a paintbrush before painting with another color.

ȼWatercolor paint

Phase 1

ȼDraw a vertical and horizontal line

divding the paper into four squares.

ȼDraw a heart - half on one side of

the vertical line and half on the other.

ȼTrace the line with oil pastels.

ȼColor every portion of the heart us-

ing a difierent color oil pastel.

Phase 2

ȼDemo how to paint directly on top

of the oil pastels.

ȼPaint with the watercolor over every

square including the heart portion.

ȼOnce the painting is dry use a

Sharpie marker to write the students

name and year.

Discuss how he used warm and cool

colors to give them impression of a sunrise.

ȼDraw a horizon line across the page

using a pencil.

ȼPaint warm colors above the hori-

zon line.

ȼPaint cool colors below the horizon

line.

Phase 2

ȼReview Claude Monet"s painting

Impression Sunrise

ȼDiscuss how the boats are in

shadow or silhouette. You can still make out the shape of the boat even though you can"t see the details of the boat.

ȼDemonstrate how to draw basic

shapes of the boat on black paper. (emphasize drawing large shapes and using the paper wisely)

ȼTrapezoid, 1 long skinny rectangle

and 2 triangles, 1 small and 1 big.

ȼBefore students cut out their

shapes, check to make sure they have drawn large shapes.

ȼStudents cut out shapes and ar-

range on paper.

ȼOnce arrangement is satisfactory

glue shapes to center of paper.

ȼ˒Lead students in a teacher-directed drawing.

ȼ˒Draw a sideways raindrop for the

body of each of the fish.

ȼ˒Draw half circles for each eye.

ȼ˒Add two fins and a tail.

ȼ˒Trace over the pencil drawing with a warm colored oil pastel.

ȼ˒Color the body with warm colored

oil pastels.

ȼ˒Eyes should be colored black and

white.

Phase 2

ȼ˒Have students sign their artwork using a warm colored oil pastel.

ȼ˒Demonstrate the watercolor and oil

pastel technique.

ȼ˒Demonstrate the watercolor salt

resist technique. ȼ˒Paint a small area of the paper with plain water.

ȼ˒Paint on top of the water with blue

liquid watercolor.

ȼ˒Quickly sprinkle salt on top.

ȼ˒Continue the same steps doing a

small portion at a time until all the paper has been painted and there are no white spots (students can paint on top of fish.)

ȼ˒Sign name with Sharpie marker.

how to draw a cupcake. (there are lots of step-by-step instructions available online)

ȼ˒Also add a horizon and line and

pattern in the background to give a little more interest to the draw- ing.

ȼ˒Emphasize drawing big and fill-

ing the entire page. ȼ˒Trace the pencil drawing with a black sharpie marker.
