Salutations sportives.

hen the lights dimmed for the final time in thePalasport Tazzoli on the
evening of January 27,2007 in Torino, Italy, it
not only marked the end of WinterUniversiade 2007, but it
sent a message to the international sporting world that Winter Universiade2007 in Torino was a huge success.
Over 1638 athletes and 873 officials from
48 different countries, a record breaking
number took part in these WinterUniversity Games. My heartiest congratula-
tions to both Honorary President, GiovannaNebiolo and Vice President Riccardo D'Elicio
of the local Organising Committee for the outstanding success of this WinterUniversiade. To the Mayors, their staffs and
to the citizens of Torino, Bardonecchia,Cesana, Pinerolo, Pragelato and Torre
Pellice, I send a huge thank you for your
efforts.During our time in Torino, both the FISU
Steering Committee and the FISU Executive
Committee held important meetings. The
FISU Steering Committee made its final
plans for the selection of a new SecretaryGeneral for FISU which will take place
during the Universiade in August inBangkok, Thailand.
The major item involving the FISU
Executive Committee was the selection of
the host city for both the Winter andSummer Universiades in the year 2011. As
you are aware we had a total of two citiesbidding for the WinterUniversiade and five cities
bidding to host the SummerUniversiade. As you can
well imagine it was a long and tedious experience for the members of theExecutive Committee as all
of the cities bidding for both Universiades were cities that were very capable of hosting a Universiade. The Executive Committee heard one hour
presentations from each city. After all of the presentations were completed, conside- rable time was spent by the committee discussing the merits, both pro and con, before a final decision was made. The committee awarded the Winter Games to the city of Erzurum, Turkey and theSummer Games to the city of Shenzhen,
China.
On behalf of the entire FISU Family, I'd like
to extend our congratulations to both the city of Erzurum and Shenzhen on being awarded these two Universiades. I'm sure that both will produce Universiades in 2011 that we will be proud of.The first week of April of this year shall
find us in Bangkok, Thailand for the meeting of the Heads of delegation forSummer Universiade Bangkok 2007. From
early indications, we will host again the largest Summer Universiade in our history. Our Director General, Mr Eric Saintrond, has
just returned from a meeting with the localOrganising Committee in Bangkok and
reports that all is going well. WLWe will continue to monitor
the progress of the localOrganising Committee to
insure you, our membership that we will be able to accommodate your every need. The FISU Executive
Committee will hold one of
its final meetings in Brussels, Belgium onMay 13-14, 2007. At this time we will
make our final plans for hosting the FISUGeneral Assembly scheduled for August 5-6,
2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. As this is an
election year it is important that as many of our members are present to vote on those who will lead us in the future. You will receive from the FISU Office in
Brussels all the necessary information
concerning the General Assembly in the near future.I personally look forward to welcoming
each and every one of you to the FISUGeneral Assembly as well as to the Opening
Ceremony of Summer Universiade 2007.
This year's Summer Universiade is in
honour of His Majesty the King of Thailand who will be celebrating his eightieth birthday. You are all invited to help celebrate that important day.Best personal regard,
Sincerely,
George E. KILLIAN
