About This Collection ...

The names above may be found in a collection begun in 1992 by Dr Charles Barber, a conductor active in concert, opera, and recordings, and a teacher in the history and aesthetics of conducting.

There are some

2000 hours of these artists variously in rehearsal, concert, and conversation. The

earliest dates from 1897, and those with sound from 1926. When the collection is completed, it will be donated to the Archive of Recorded Sound at Stanford University and made available for scholarly examination and study.

Although some

of these holdings are preserved in 16mm film, BETA, SECAM, and in 3/4" or 1" broadcast formats, the great majority are in 1/2" NTSC or PAL VHS. It is intended that this collection will in time be converted to CD-ROM so that anyone with a Mac and a modem will be able to dial in and download. There are, however, a number of technical and copyright questions which must be resolved first.

Accordingly, anyone who wishes

to view these films is presently asked to do so in person. For legal and contractual reasons, duplication of copyright or private domain materials is not possible. There is no charge for viewing these films on site.

To make

an appointment, or to enquire about the particulars of this collection, please contact: Dr Charles Barber, Box 610016, Redwood City CA, 94061. (650) 361-9593 barber@batnet.com
