Yvonne Salmon (1885-1965) wrote this

b ook in 1943, a very early biography of G eneral de Gaulle, for Alliance Française U

K members and for British teenagers.

T he authors of the two prefaces to this n ew edition are respectively a Français L ibre, later historian, and the director of A lliance Française de Londres. T his edition contains the recovered o riginal typescript for the book and h andwritten annotations by de Gaulle h imself. " Voici une des toutes premières biographies consacrées au Général qui offre l"étonnante singularité d"avoir été révisée, la plume à la main, et corrigée par de Gaulle lui-même.

Son auteur ? Yvonne Salmon, Française

de Grande-Bretagne, traductrice estimable de Thomas Hardy, fut Secrétaire Générale de l"Alliance Française à Londres de 1920

à 1945.

La reproduction en fac-similé des pages du

" tapuscrit » original annoté par de Gaulle et de sa lettre de remerciements, sauvés par le Musée français des Lettres et des Manuscrits, lui ajoute une valeur d"émotion. »

GOALS AND GENERAL CONTENT

As a beginner you will learn some familiarand everyday expressions and simplestatements for basic needs, such asintroducing yourself or someone else andhow to ask personal questions (living area,relationships, family...). You will learn howto respond to the same sort of questions.You will be able to interact andcommunicate in a simple way in order todeal with everyday basic situations.

You will learn how to talk about yourself,local geography, shopping, education andwork. You will be able to communicate insituations that require a direct exchange ofinformation on familiar and routinematters. At the end of this level you will beable to describe in simple terms aspects ofyour background and immediateenvironment. You will also acquireconversational language skills to deal withmost social, work or travelling needs.

You will obtain a broader range oflanguage allowing you to communicatemore spontaneously on a wide range oftopics using colloquial or formal French asappropriate. You will be able to speak onfamiliar subjects and in your area of interestand to briefly articulate reasons for orexplanations about projects or ideas. Youwill also be able to describe experiences andevents, hopes and ambitions.

This level is about more complex languageinvolving both concrete and abstractsubjects. You will learn how to putarguments for and against and topersuade. You will be starting tocommunicate easily and able to hold agood conversation with a native speaker.You will be able to produce clear, detailedtext on a wide range of subjects andexplain a viewpoint on a topical issue.

Close to mother tongue standard, you willkeep up your French and use languageflexibly and effectively for social purposes.You will read French literature, talk aboutcurrent affairs and acquire a deeperknowledge of the language. You will beable to express yourself precisely throughunderstanding, nuance, differencesbetween language registers and you willbe able to summarise information fromdifferent spoken and written sources.

levels which have now become a reference as far as learning and teaching a language are concerned. E ach of the levels shown opposite cover the main competences a student will learn. An initial free assessment gives you the opportunity to discuss your needs and objectives and allows us to recommend the most appropriate course.

We have created learning

contents that match each level described in the CEFR, so there is a link between our teaching and learning resources and the language competences you wish to acquire.

You will need to attend several of

our courses to complete a CEFR level. For example, to complete

CEFR level A2, you will need to

complete our levels 1C to 2B.

Please check our website or get in touch for more details closer to the date. 9 Alliance Française de Londres offers private tuition for individuals and groups. Whether learning French for pleasure, travel or for work, you follow a course tailored for you by our experienced and professional tutors. Tuition is given either at your central London location or at our premises in air-conditioned classrooms. All group classes are currently on-line while government restrictions remain in place.

IN-COMPANY TRAINING

We design and deliver training programmes

for businesses, charities, the civil service and other organisations across central London.

Tuition can be held in-company or at our

school. Customised tuition is ideal for fitting around busy work schedules. Students can sit the exams mentioned on page 10.

FRENCH FOR YOUNGER STUDENTS
