Dear friends,

2016 proved to be a great year of competition and also marked what will be seen in future years as a real

turning point for university sport. It is in the years between Universiades that the full diversity of student

sport is on display, with the FISU Forum also providing food for thought.

fiese are the years where FISU can best introduce innovations and none was more important in 2015 than

the World University League for 3x3 basketball. As a discipline, 3x3 basketball is well adapted to our modern

times, with great youth appeal. It flts well with the informal way that so many students now seek to play sport,

requiring little more than a few friends who want to come together for a quick game on an active campus.

We can expect to see 3x3 become a mainstay of the Olympic Games from Tokyo 2020 on. Simply by staging

our own 3x3 competitions, FISU would already have demonstrated that it is moving with the times. We

have gone much further, however, by introducing a new format for global university sport, whereby teams

compete not for their countries but for their universities.

Trialled with much success by the European University Sports Association, this format is very well suited

to an environment where universities compete globally for students, for faculty, for research support and

more. And thanks to the success of the World University League this year, FISU will be sure to implement

more in years to come.

In this year of innovation, the other advance that we can all be very proud of is the International Day of

University Sport. Proclaimed by UNESCO, the 20 September will from now on be a special celebration of all

that is great with university sport around the world.

It was a real pleasure to celebrate the International Day of University Sport in the student-fllled city that FISU

now calls home, the Olympic capital Lausanne. fie Lausanne in Motion festival also brought campus sport

into the streets, helping to further improve the relationship between the city and the universities it hosts.

As a dynamic city and the capital of Olympic sport, Lausanne is the perfect place for FISU to work and we

can already look forward to the day in 2018 when all of our sta? comes together under one roof on campus

there. By then, I am confldent FISU will be working together as one team, with a single and shared plan,

and around the unifying goal of helping shape the leaders of tomorrow through their experiences of inter-

national university sport.

fiis has been the flrst full year in which I have had the privilege of serving FISU as president. It is a year that

has amplifled my admiration for all the talented and dedicated people who do so much to help university

students grow thanks to sport. Whether an athlete, or administrator, a fan or a friend, do please accept my

sincere thanks.

2016 a été une excellente année de compétitions, qui a également marqué ce qui sera considéré, dans les

années à venir, comme un véritable tournant dans l'histoire du sport universitaire. C'est dans les périodes de

pause entre deux éditions des Universiades que toute la diversité du sport universitaire se manifeste, grâce,

notamment, au Forum de la FISU, qui apporte une contribution remarquable à la ré?exion.

C'est pendant ces périodes que la FISU peut mettre en oeuvre des innovations comme celle, extrêmement

importante, de la Ligue Mondiale Universitaire de basket 3x3, lancée en 2015. En tant que discipline spor-

tive, le basket 3x3 est très adapté à notre époque et revêt un grand attrait pour les jeunes. Il est tout à fait

conforme à la manière de pratiquer le sport de façon informelle des jeunes d'aujourd'hui, avec, simplement,

un groupe d'amis qui ont envie de se retrouver sur le campus pour une petite partie.

Nous sommes persuadés que le basket 3x3 deviendra un pilier des Jeux Olympiques à compter de l'édition

de Tokyo 2020. En organisant des compétitions de basket 3x3, la FISU a déjà montré qu'elle était en syntonie

avec son époque. Mais, nous sommes allés encore plus loin en introduisant un nouveau format de sport

universitaire, dans lequel les équipes concourent non pas pour leur pays, mais pour leur université.

Testé avec succès par l'Association Européenne du Sport Universitaire, ce format est très adapté à un envi

ronnement dans lequel les universités luttent, au niveau mondial, pour attirer des étudiants, des enseignants,

des aides pour la recherche etc. Et, grâce au succès remporté, cette année, par la Ligue Mondiale Universi

taire, la FISU pourra certainement aller encore plus loin dans les années à venir.

Pendant cette année innovante, la Journée Internationale du Sport Universitaire proclamée par

l'UNESCO a été une autre avancée dont nous pouvons tous être très flers. Dorénavant, le 20 sep

tembre, nous célébrerons tous les aspects positifs du sport universitaire dans le monde entier.

Cela a été un vrai plaisir de célébrer, cette année, cette Journée Internationale du Sport Uni

versitaire dans la ville que la FISU s'est choisie comme maison, la capitale olympique, Lau sanne, avec la participation d'un très grand nombre d'étudiants. Le Festival " Lausanne

en Mouvement » a contribué à porter le sport universitaire dans les rues de la ville et à

renforcer les liens entre la ville et les universités qu'elle accueille. En tant que ville dynamique et capitale du sport olympique, Lausanne est le lieu idéal pour l'activité de la FISU et nous sommes impatients de pouvoir rapatrier, en 2018, la totalité de

notre personnel dans notre siège de Lausanne. D'ici là, je suis sûr que la FISU saura travailler

comme une seule, grande équipe, pour la réalisation d'un projet commun: façonner les champions

et les leaders de demain grâce aux expériences acquises dans l'exercice du sport universitaire.

Au bout de ma première année entière de présidence de la FISU, je suis ravi de cette expérience. J'ai une très grande admiration pour toutes les personnes compétentes et dévouées qui mettent tout en oeuvre pour aider les étudiants à grandir grâce au sport. Mes remerciements les plus sincères vont à vous tous: athlètes, gestionnaires, supporters ou simples amis.
