The Met

September 1-13, 2022

Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tunisia is one of the most mesmerizing yet overlooked destinations in North Africa. Three thousand years of rule by Phoenicians, Amazigh people, Romans, Arabs, Turks, the French, and others left behind marvelous archaeological sites, walled medinas, peaceful oases, ornate mosques - and several important UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Tunisia's Roman ruins rival any found in Italy, and the country's wonderful museums house remarkable ancient treasures. On a magnificent 11-night program in September 2022, join me to discover this incredible cultural legacy. We will begin in Tunis, a balmy, cosmopolitan capital on the Mediterranean coast. Outside the city, we will experience the ancient city of Carthage, once Rome's archrival and later its most cherished conquest. After roaming its centuries-old baths, temples, and theaters, we will see local artifacts at the excellent Carthage National Museum. At the edge of the Téboursouk Mountains, the UNESCO-listed Roman site of Dougga will inspire awe with its exquisite state of preservation. In Tunis, a special tour of the National Bardo Museum, located in a luxurious

19th-century palace, will o?er us a close look at some of Tunisia's most highly regarded

treasures, including the unique, 11th-century Blue Quran and the world's largest collection of

Roman polychrome mosaics.

As a specialist in Islamic art and architecture, I am thrilled to provide you with background on the Islamic artistic and cultural heritage of Tunisia. I will introduce you to Kairouan - an ancient center of scholarship venerated as Sunni Islam's fourth holiest city. We will explore its vast,

7th-century Great Mosque, an architectural masterpiece. Another highlight of our trip will be

the museum and archaeological site at El Jem, home to a 35,000-seat Roman amphitheater as spectacular as Rome's Colosseum. A two-day adventure in the charming Saharan oasis city of Tozeur will conclude our trip, with an Arabian-themed night under the desert stars. I hope to see you in Tunisia for a dive into legendary yet underexplored history, art, and culture.

Sincerely,

Deniz Beyazit
