et que cette manière de purgatoire lui confère une identité spectrale1 faite de contradictions qui innervent ses écrits. Ainsi le non- réputation bifide constitue-t-il un point de départ logique. Nous souhaitons fournir dès à présent quelques éléments biographiques2 afin un point de vue psychologisant qui risquerait de réduire Jackson aux stéréotypes dont elle fut trop longtemps la prisonnière. Elle naît à San Francisco le 14 décembre 1916 dans une famille aisée ; sa mère, aux États- Label & Lithograph. Pour des raisons professionnelles, la famille quitte la Californie prend ses nouvelles fonctions de vice-président chez Traung.Shirley Jackson
elle rencontre Stanley Hyman York, où Jackson commence à publier des nouvelles dans la revue The New Yorker dès 1943. En 1945, ils déménagent dans le Vermont, car Stanley Hyman obtient un La carrière de romancière de Jackson prend son essor en 1948, avec Road, mais surtout grâce au recueil Lottery, en 1949. Hangsaman paraît en 1951, et Nest1 -Yves Pétillon
dans son Histoire de la littérature américaine, 1939-1989, ni Marc Saporta dans son Histoire du
