The Berger Picard Club of America (BPCA) Board of Directors approves the following Health Statement for use on

the AKC website.

Although the Berger Picard appears to be a fairly healthy breed, as still a fairly new breed in North America, health

issues and concerns are continually being monitored closely and will be updated if the need arises. The following

guidelines are required for an OFA CHIC number and are greatly supported and encouraged by the BPCA along with

entering and updating of the Berger Picard Health Survey hosted by the OFA.

The following list represents the basic/minimum health screening recommendations by the BPCA for all breeding

stock. There may be other appropriate health screening tests. And, there may be other health concerns for which there

is no commonly accepted screening protocol available. CHIC requirements are to be kept updated.

1. Hip Dysplasia Evaluation (one of the following)

a. OFA Evaluation b. PennHIP Evaluation

2. Eye Examination by a board certified ACVO Ophthalmologist (minimum age 24 months, yearly thereafter)

3. DNA Repository

a. Participation in the OFA/CHIC DNA Repository (blood sample required)

4. Health Elective (One of the following tests)

a. OFA Congenital Cardiac Exam b. OFA Elbow Dysplasia Evaluation c. OFA Thyroid evaluation from an approved laboratory d. OFA Advanced Cardiac Exam

In addition, the BPCA Standard of Ethical Conduct for Breeders as well as the BPCA Preferred Breeders List

emphasizes public disclosure of all health results via OFA as one of the cornerstones in preserving the Berger Picard

There have been reported anecdotal cases of severe reactions to anesthesia and even death in Picards. Therefore, the

BPCA recommends when any procedure using anesthesia is necessary to communicate to the treating veterinarian to

use the sight hound protocol on all Berger Picards as the body fat/muscle ratio is more similar to sighthounds than

typical shepherds. Also, the BPCA has two documented severe reactions involving the use of morphine as a pre-

anesthesia drug and this information should be also be communicated to the treating veterinarian.
