What can't I apply for

There are some things we can't pay for

through

Supporting Grassroots Live

Music. These include:

Bands or agents

for their shows or tours. You can apply to normal Project

Grants for this though

General running costs or overheads

like ongoing rent or business rates etc.

Fundraising or profit-making projects.

Your income must match your

expenditure.

See the budget section

for more help with this.

How to apply

To apply, start a new application online.

Choose Project Grants: Supporting

Grassroots Live Music from the list.

At the start, we will ask you if:

your work focuses on hosting and promoting live music, and your project focuses on hosting and promoting live music

Tick yes to both. You will be applying to

Supporting Grassroots Live Music,

rather than the main programme.

This means your application will not be

in competition with applications from other disciplines like Theatre, Visual

Arts, Museums or big music venues.

It's just for Grassroots Music.

In the next few pages, we'll go over the four main parts of the form, and what we expect to see.

Quality

- You and your project

Tell us about any similar projects and

work you have done in the past.

Tell us about your project

What will happen in it?

Why do you want to do it?

What will people get out of it?

What makes it exciting or interesting?

Is it based on any ideas or research?

If it's for equipment or building work, how will

your work benefit in the future?

Tell us how this project will make you

better at what you do in the future.

Will you be able to put on more bands or work

with new audiences?

People who will work with you

If you are working with bands,

promoters, sound techs or other artists, tell us about them

Who are they?

What will they do?

Why are they the right person for the job?

For example, you might write

something like:

David Wilkes - Musician

David is an original folk musician whose lyrics

focus on social issues. He is an emerging artist, having played a number of local venues and festivals, and is ready to take his work to the next level.

Rita Aslam - Sound technician

Rita has worked as a producer for local bands,

and worked in sound for the last ten years, including with large name acts like [BAND

NAME]. She will lend her expertise to the live

performers.

Reaching people with your work

Who is your project for?

For example, this might be:

fans of a certain music type, like jazz or pop families and children, or older people minority groups in your town people who do not usually go to live music events or your venue

How will people see or hear your

work?

For example, this might be:

in the audience at a show taking part in a workshop watching a video stream online

What will your project make people

think about or how will it make them feel?

How will you make sure people find

out about your project?

For example, this might be:

flyers, posters and brochures adverts in newspapers, TV or radio adverts in your partners' venues or booklets using a mailing list to email people using social media like Facebook and Twitter

The budget for your project

Money going into your project

How much money will you have from

other places for your project?

You need a minimum of 10% from other

places. For example, this might be: by selling tickets, records or merch other grants, awards or savings discounts or volunteers

Spending the money

What will you spend the money on?

How much will each bit cost?

How have you worked out the numbers

in your budget? Have you used quotes?

How have you worked out ticket sales?

Have you managed a budget like this

before? If you have not, has anyone else who is working on your project?

Supporting Grassroots Live Music

Easy Read

Things to remember about budgets

We can't support fundraising or profit-

making projects. Your income must match your expenditure.

Include any expected ticket sales in your

project income

If you are taking a payment for your

services, that's fine. Include it in the expenditure

You don't have to put bar or food sales

towards the project if you don't want to or can't afford it

We want to see artists paid fairly. We'd

rather see good wages in place than a cheap project where people aren't being paid properly

Check out the Musicians Union's

guidance on fees and payments for more help on this.

How you'll make it happen

Will you work with any partners to

help run your project? If so, what will they do?

For example, you might write something like:

Attitude is Everything

- helping me improve the accessibility of my venue

ABC Marketing - helping me contact people to

come and see my shows

Where will your project happen?

If you're doing a tour of venues, have you spoken

to or booked the places it will happen?

What are the different parts of your

project and when will they happen?

Include things like: meetings, research, travel,

workshops, shows and time for evaluation.

Finding out if your project was a success

At the end of your project, it is important

to find out how it went. How will you do this?

Think about what you said you wanted

to get out of your project

Think about the different people you can

ask like artists, audiences or partne rs

For example, you might write something like:

I will ask my partners to answer a list of

questions about the project I will ask people in the audience what they got out of the show

I will read reviews of the show

I will count the number of tickets we sold

I will write about what I learned and how this

can help me on my next project

Useful Tips

Even if you are not applying for your

future programme, you can still tell us about it. We want to hear how your project will help your work in the future.

For example, if your application is about

buying equipment, or doing building work, it might not include shows at all

In this case, tell us how this will help

you r live shows in the future

Will it help you improve the live show

quality or programme more artists?

Who will be playing?

Will it mean more people can access

your venue?

Will it make your venue more resilient or

environmentally friendly?
