Letter from the Superintendent

Dear DC-G Family,

With the recent events throughout our nation, I would like to take time to reassure the DC-G families of the security procedures and protocols in place throughout our district. Whenever students or staff report an in- cident, we collaborate with principals and if necessary, law enforcement to assess the threat level and determine the best course of action to keep students and staff safe. Our district has taken steps in the past few years to enhance our safety provisions. We have contracted with Employee Family Resources (EFR) for additional counseling. We have also made changes to our facilities that increase security. Building doors remain locked during school hours, and our schools utilize a buzz-in system for visitors. Three of our el- ementaries have magnetic strips, which can be used in a situation when a door needs to be locked quickly. Other buildings have doors that can be locked from the inside. We have updated the security cameras at Mead- ows and High School, providing us multiple views of inside and outside the buildings. The district's safety committee meets on a regular basis throughout the year. This year the group reviewed and updated our crisis plan. They have also assured that each staff member and substitute teacher were given an ID Badge that they are expected to wear regularly, and made sure that each building was completing their emergency drills in a timely manner. The crisis plan is frequently reviewed and amended through the district's safety committee and administrative team. In addition, safety drills are implemented at each building to allow students and staff to practice re- sponse time and processes in the event of an emergency. The best strategy for safety is to remain vigilant in our classrooms, schools, and community. We encourage our staff and students to com- municate any suspicious activity. The answers to this problem are com- plex as they seem to be a societal problem. Mental health, emotional dysfunction, anger, and isolation are part of our world today. The safety our students and staff in the DC-G District is our primary concern; there- fore, it is important that we continue to have dialogue, practice our safety procedures, and communicate to parents about the extensive measure our school has in place to address the needs of all children. SuperintendentDC-G Students Win National Competition Adam Koch and Tyler Cooney will receive $5,000 from C-SPAN for their Grand Prize documentary, "Old Enough to Fight, Old Enough to Vote." C-SPAN announced the winners of the national 2018 StudentCam documentary competition awarding a total of $100,000 in cash prizes to winning documentaries. Each year since 2006, C-SPAN partners with its local cable television providers in communities nationwide to invite middle and high school students to produce short documentaries about a subject of national importance. This year students addressed the theme, "The Constitution & You: Choose a provision of the U.S. Constitution and create a video illustrating why it's important to you."

C-SPAN received a record 2,985 video submissions from over 5,700 students in 46 states and Washington, D.C. Students across the country engaged in

leaders and educators to explore how national issues impact their daily lives. High School in Grimes, Iowa (Mediacom). Their winning documentary will air on C-SPAN at 6:50 a.m. ET and throughout the day on April 22. The annual competition is sponsored by the C-SPAN Education Foundation. Videos were evaluated by a panel of educators and C-SPAN representatives based on the thoughtful examination of the competition's theme, quality of expression, inclusion of varying sides of the documentary's topic, and effective incorporation of C-SPAN programming.
