The NIGER BOOKSHELF

consists of a collection of documents relevant to the study of agriculture in the semi-arid conditions characteristic of Niger

These documents'

include:

1) journal articles

2) proceedings

from meetings 3) edited volumes

4) software guides

5) publications

internal to various research projects

6) consultant

and USAID reports

7) annual reports of various organizations operating

in the Sahel

8) drafts of current, relevant research

The collection � centers primarily on Niger as a way to provide a service to Purdue researchers currently involved in the Niger Applied Agricultural

Research Project. This collection may

also serve as background material for those students interested in agricultural problems in the Sahel.

Students

using this material can appraise the current stnte of research in Sahelian regions and identify further needs.

While it is recognized

that a lot of materials are produced in other languages, all documents currently collected are wLitten in French or the majority in Engli.sh.

Each item is coded with a 3 element coda: {pc/In/yr f}, where: "1pc" is the primary code (see list above) "Iln" is the first letter of the main author's last name "yr f" is the year of publication and f appears if the documert is the French version of a document originally published in English.

The primary code is

applied to a volume. Since some volumes contain articles or chapters by various authors and these articles are listed separately, the code may be not always describe a particular citation. These codes are primarily used for classification and retrieval purposes, not for searching material in the database.

The references are recorded in WordPerfect,

Version 5.0 in

a format suitable for a reference list. An alphabetical catalog on paper and a disk containing the WordPerfect formatted catalog can be obtained. The list can also be provided in ASCTI bormat.

In the future,

a set of macros will provide users with the capability to search thei.r catalog and produce lists of references tha, can center more closely on their topic.

Users will also be able to control output format.

For now, searches

by subject or code must be done manually, using the search key. In order to collect a number of references for further use, the following procedure may be used:

1) locate an item in the alphabetical

listing

2) highlight item using

and copy it <2>

3) enter document

4) press to retrieve

5) return to document 1, the original list,

and repeat these operations until satisfied that the search has yielded the necessary documents.

A new (sub) list has

now been produced and can be printed or ordered alphabetically . ii
