In addition to our popular permanent exhibition, All About Shoes, the Museum has three galleries for changing exhibitions, ensuring that each visit t o the museum o f ers a new experience. Currently on view are The Great Divide: Footwear in the Age of Enlightenment, All Dolled Up: Fashioning Cultural Expectations and Art & Innovation: T raditional Arctic Footwear from the Bata Shoe Museum Collection. Objects Conservator

The BSM is seeking to hire a full time, permanent objects conservator. This multifaceted position is an integral part of the curatorial department. The successful candidate will be responsible for conservation treatment and overall care of the collection. The Bata Shoe Museum houses an international collection of 15,000 shoes and related artefacts pertaining to the history of footwear and shoemaking. The objects are made from a vast array of materials, including animal skins, textiles and a wide variety of plastics. •Responsibilities include: - writing condition reports, as well as taking base line condition photographs for new acquisitions and incoming and outgoing loans - new acquisitions: applying artefact numbers, making storage mounts and providing treatment as necessary - in-house exhibitions: examining selected artefacts, recommending and performing treatment, designing/fabricating display mounts, including the fabrication of mannequins for elements of clothing; working with the Manager of

on lighting and casework materials; installing/handling artefacts, including loan objects as necessary. - outgoing loans: reviewing artefact request list; providing a budget and time line for implementing treatment; reviewing facility reports and casework, making display recommendations; providing quotes for packaging materials; packi ng all artefacts; installing artefacts on loan to other institutions using digi tal condition reports - working with the Building Manager to assist with monitoring the integrat ed pest management plan and environmental controls for the galleries and storage rooms - care of collections: researching and implementing storage solutions - this position is an integral part of the curatorial team and participati on in curatorial discussions concerning exhibition planning and acquisitions a nd artefact care is ongoing.

3)HOURS

Hours are 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with the possibility of evening and weekend work as needed.

4)COMPENSATION

$70,000 plus benefits, Negotiable

5)CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION

The ideal candidate will have:

- a Master's degree or equivalent college diploma in Conservation or related field - a minimum of five to eight years of experience - knowledge of the Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice of the Canadia n Association for Conservation of Cultural Property (CAC) and of the Can adian

Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC)

- demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects to ensure that deadline s are met and provide clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments undertaken in accordance with professional conservation standards - a proven ability to work with three dimensional objects; hand sewing ski lls are essential - strong organizational and research skills, as well as the ability to wor k independently and collaboratively - a commitment to working with source communities to determine best practi ces for care, storage and display; experience working with Indigenous ancestral belongings in particular is a very strong asset - experience with Word, Excel, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat - a valid travel passport or the ability to obtain one, is mandatory, as is proof of Covid vaccinations.
