Th e presen t volum e i s th e elevent h volum e o f th e

Reports

of

InternationalArbitral Awards the first eight volumes of which contain awards handed downbetween 1920 and 1941. It is the third and last volume in a series coveringthe period from 1902 to 1920.

A s i n previou s volumes th e award s i n th e presen t volum e ar e printe d i

nchronological order. The particular form of presentation of the collection ofawards published in this and the two preceding volumes has been as much theresult of the relationship between certain of the awards as the outcome of theexigencies of publication. Thus, in volume IX of the Reports - the first of theseries of three volumes covering the period from 1902 to 1920 - it was decidedto reproduce the award rendered on 22 February 1904 in the VenezuelanPreferential Case immediately before the awards handed down in the VenezuelanArbitrations on 1903-1905. This was done because the Venezuelan PreferentialCase was clearly Jinked with the Venezuelan Arbitrations of 1903-1905, thetexts of which were printed in volumes IX and X without a break in continuity.The present volume contains the remaining awards handed down in 1904which were not reproduced in the two preceding volumes. It also contains anumber of other awards rendered between 1904 and 1920.

nprepared in both English and French. Short historical notes and bibliographi-cal references have also been added.As with volumes IV to X, this volume has been prepared by the CodificationDivision of the Office of Legal Affairs of the Secretariat of the United Nations.

Quant à la présentation del'ensemble des sentences publiées dans le présent volume ainsi que dans lesdeux volumes précédents, elle est conçue d'une manière particulière due tantaux liens existant entre certaines de ces sentences qu'aux exigences de la publi-cation. Ainsi, dans le volume IX du Recueil qui inaugure la série couvrant lapériode entre 1902 et 1920, on a jugé approprié de reproquire, immédiatementavant les arbitrages vénézuéliens de 1903-1905, la sentence rendue le 22 février1904 dans l'affaire du traitement préférentiel de réclamations contre le Venezuela,cette affaire étant en relation étroite avec lesdits arbitrages, dont on a pris soind'insérer le texte de façon ininterrompue dans le volume en question ainsi quedans le volume suivant. Le présent volume contient le reste des sentencesrendues en 1904 qui n'ont pas été reproduites dans les deux volumes précédents;il contient également d'autres sentences prononcées entre cette date et 1920.
