International

Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1)

in Geography (4GE1)

May/June

2022 assessment

In response to the changes Ofqual has introduced to the GCSE (9-1) in Geography, we have made some changes to the assessment of Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9-1) in

Geography (4GE1) qualification in 2022.

These changes will only apply to the May/June 2022 assessment. Here are some frequently asked questions that should help you understand what this means to you and your students. What are the changes to the qualification?

1. Remove requirements for:

(i) a written statement that centres have given students the opportunity to undertake 2 days of fieldwork (ii) students to answer questions in the exam relating to their own fieldwork experience. 2.

Paper 2, Section A - students to answer one question from Questions 1, 2 and 3. What does that mean for the Pearson Edexcel International

GCSE in

Geography? Students are no longer required to answer any questions on fieldwork they have conducted themselves. These will be removed from the May/June 2022 examination papers. Students will be required to answer questions on unfamiliar fieldwork only. Students will answer one question instead of two in Paper 2, Section A. 2 Does this mean we shouldn't do fieldwork with our students? We would still encourage students to conduct their own fieldwork, if possible, as this develops skills to support students ' progression within the subject, and the content related to fieldwork and the enquiry process still needs to be delivered and will be assessed in unfamiliar contexts within the exam.

Will the examination papers change?

Yes, they will change due to the removal of familiar fieldwork questions in Section B in both Papers 1 and 2. There are also new rubrics for Paper 2, Section A. An outline of the changes and an example of the adapted paper will be available on the website.

Will the questions on the paper be different?

Yes. The questions in Section B of Paper 1 and Paper 2 will change to focus on unfamiliar fieldwork only.

Will the timings on the paper be different?

No - both papers will retain their original duration, i.e. Paper 1 - 1 hour and 10 minutes, and

Paper 2 - 1 hour and 45 minutes assessment time.

Are there any changes to the content of the specification for candidates completing assessment in summer 2022? No - there are no changes to the content of the specification. Will these changes remain for subsequent assessment series (i.e. 2023 or beyond)? No. These changes are only in place for the summer 2022 series. How will these changes affect students who are starting their

International

GCSEs in September 202

1, but not sitting exams until 2023 (i.e. Year 10

students)? These changes have been agreed by DfE and Ofqual to support your Year 11 students whose studies have been disrupted. The guidance, for now, is that these Year 10 students should receive a near-as-normal experience as they embark on their International GCSEs. Should there be further public health incidents which lead to disruption for these students, then it is likely that guidance would then be issued separately for this cohort of students.quotesdbs_dbs9.pdfusesText_15
