The Iowa Board of Nursing has approved

Allen College's request to implement a new

track - Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health

Nurse Practitioner (APMHNP) - in its

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

program. The new track is one of only two such MSN programs in the state of Iowa.

According to Allen College's dean of

academic affairs Dr. Susan Dawson, who is a certified advanced practice psychiatric nurse, the program has been developed in response to a well-documented, serious shortage of mental health practitioners in Iowa, especially psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric- mental health nurse practitioners. Dr. Dawson said that graduates of the program would be prepared to provide services in a range of settings, including hospital psychiatric units, emergency departments, community mental health centers and private practice settings.

Graduates may also assume faculty positions

in nursing schools experiencing a shortage of faculty with degrees in psychiatric-mental health nursing. The state of Iowa ranks among thelowest in the nation for numbers of available psychiatric mental health care providers.

The federal Health Resources Services

Administration data ranks Iowa 47th among

states in psychiatrists per 100,000 population and 46th for psychologists per 100,000 population. Of the 1,219 actively licensed advanced registered nurse practitioners residing in Iowa, only 67 (5.4 percent) held certification in psychiatric/mental health nursing. In addition, of all health professions studied in 2005, those servicing the mental health needs of Iowans exhibited the highest combined percentage of licensees facing retirement.

The APMHNP track, the third nurse

practitioner track in Allen's MSN program, will prepare graduates to provide comprehensive psychiatric-mental health nursing care to adults who are at risk for mental illness, as well as those who are in need of psychiatric services, including patients with substance abuse problems and co-occurring medical conditions. Graduates will be taught advanced skills in: • Psychosocial and physical assessment and differential diagnosis of client conditions • Management of care over time • Symptom management and behavior change through therapy, education and medication management • Delivery of culturally competent care • Collaboration with families and other practitioners

Chancellor's Message

Allen College is an Iowa institution.

We have shaped our programs and services

to serve the citizens of Iowa. The College's focus on Iowa is made evident in recently- released data showing that among Iowa's colleges and universities, Allen College ranks number one in the percentage of its students who are actually from Iowa. In

2005-06, 91 percent of our students were

from Iowa, with 69 percent coming from northeast Iowa. In 2004-05, more than 75 percent of our graduates found a job in Iowa.

Of the more than 2,000 alumni for whom we

have addresses, almost 75 percent reside in

Iowa. We are in Iowa. We are for Iowa.

As an institution that is dedicated to

educating nurses and other healthcare providers for Iowa, our Iowa focus creates challenges to achieving ideal diversity in our student body. Of Iowa's almost three million citizens, about 95 percent are white. Our student population reflects that of Iowa. Allen

College student data show that in 2005-06,

almost 98 percent of our students were white.

In addition, 94 percent of our students in

2005-06 were women - not surprising, given

that nursing students account for more than

90 percent of Allen College and nursing

remains a largely female occupation. Allen

College's population of ethnic minority and

male students should be seen in light of national data. According to preliminary findings from the 2004 National Sample

Survey of Registered Nurses, about 10.6

percent of the nation's registered nurses are from racial/ethnic minority groups and about

5.7 percent of the nation's nurses are men.Other studies report that 13 percent of

students enrolled in nursing schools are men and almost 75 percent are from

Caucasian backgrounds.

With the support of its Board of Trustees,

Allen College has embarked upon a plan

aimed at diversifying the student body. This effort stems from an understanding that minorities currently make up 25 percent of the U.S. population, and that number is expected to increase to 50 percent by 2050.

However, according to a 2005 report prepared

for the Iowa Department of Public Health, "Increasing minorities in the health professions remains one of this nation's most pressing, timely and difficult challenges to address." The inclusion of these "missing persons" in the health professions is seen by some experts as an important means to address our nation's health disparities.

The primary goal of our diversity efforts

is to recruit and retain greater numbers of students currently under represented in our student body, i.e., ethnic minority students, international students and men. To achieve this goal, the College is establishing an Office of Diversity Services that will be staffed initially by a faculty member and a staff member who will dedicate a portion of their time to raising the College's visibility among potential students from these under represented groups. This initiative includes plans for the

College to work with other institutions and

organizations that can assist us in recruiting and retaining additional ethnic minority, male and international students. Given thedemographic changes that are underway in the United States, we believe that colleges and universities educating tomorrow's healthcare providers, including Allen College, have a mandate to diversify their student bodies. Through these efforts, we hope to enhance the visibility of Allen College among these currently under represented students, create a more diverse student body and provide a more diverse healthcare workforce for Iowa.

• Data-based client and program outcome evaluation • Client and family advocacy • Partnering with communities

While the psychiatric-mental health

courses will not be offered until the 2008-09 academic year, students interested in the new track may enroll, on a full- or part-time basis, in core MSN courses in August 2007 or

January 2008. Coursework will be offered

through a combination of on-campus and online courses and possibly desktop teleconferencing. Students will gain experience through a minimum of 525 hours of supervised and mentored clinical study.

Graduates will be eligible to take the

American Nurses Credentialing Center

examination leading to certification as adult psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners. Students can complete the program in twoacademic years and one summer of full- time study. A variety of part-time study options are available for students who wish to complete the degree over three years or longer.

The start-up of the APMHNP track follows

the opening of the Accelerated Track of the

BSN program in May 2007 and the Adult

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) Track

of the MSN program in the 2007 fall semester.

Twenty-three students began in the first

class of the 15-month Accelerated Track in

May 2007 and will complete coursework in

August 2008. This 15-month program is in

response to the growing need for nurses in

Iowa and across the nation. It shortens the

traditional track of the BSN program to

15 months of intensive study.Six students were admitted into the first

class of the ACNP track in the 2007 fall semester. This track of the MSN program, the only one in Iowa, is being offered in response to the growing need for advanced practice nurses. Acutely ill patients increasingly dominate the inpatient population. Allen College ACNP graduates will be prepared to be certified as acute care nurse practitioners by passing an examination offered by the American

Nurses Credentialing Center.

Three tracks of a new Bachelor of Health

Science degree program are being planned:

clinical laboratory science/medical technology, diagnostic medical sonography and nuclear medicine technology. These programs, to open in 2009 pending final approval, are also in response to the growing shortage of healthcare professionals. Alumni Association Board Strategic Planning

The Allen Alumni Nurses'Association

is currently undergoing a restructuring process. A strategic planning session was held on June 15, 2007, to define the mission, purpose and key issues of the

Association. At that meeting, the name of

the Association was officially changed to the Allen College Alumni Association.

The new Association will include all

departments of the College, Nursing and Radiology. The board is currently in committee work and will remain in thestrategic planning stage until the end of

June 2008.

The Alumni Association was brought

under the wing of the Allen Foundation on January 1, 2007. This changed the

Association from an independent

organization to one that will be overseen by the College and Allen Foundation. The alumni affairs coordinator, an employee of Allen College, will work closely with the director of the Allen Foundation to ensure the forward growth of the Association.

At the 2007 Allen Alumni Banquet on

April 28, 2007, Irene Johnson Moody was

inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Irene is a graduate of the Allen School

of Nursing class of 1945. She worked as a night supervisor at Allen Memorial

Hospital and staff nurse at the former

Schoitz Memorial Hospital in the

obstetrics and chemical dependency units. When asked what her profession was, shewas always proud to say she was a graduate of Allen Memorial Hospital

Lutheran School of Nursing. Her life

itself brings honor to her school. She has spent her entire career as a hard- working, caring, honest and selfless nurse. Irene always promotes and encourages the nursing profession, and her positive attitude has encouraged several family members to enter the profession. Congratulations, Irene!

Festivities for the 2007 Allen College

Alumni Weekend kicked off on Friday

evening, April 27, 2007, with a 50-year class wine reception hosted by Dr. Jerry

Durham. The reception was held in the

Barrett Forum Student Center on the

Allen College campus. Eighteen guests

were in attendance from as far away as

Florida. Saturday evening began with a

cocktail hour followed by a buffet dinner at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo. A program followed the dinner with updates on Allen Hospital given by

Rick Seidler, on Allen College given

Dr. Jerry Durham and on the Allen

Alumni Association given by

JoAn Headington. Honor classes also

gave updates. The 2006-2007 graduates were recognized. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee,

Irene Johnson Moody.
