2008 HONDA ACCORD COUPE EX-L

The Accord coupe differs from the sedan mostly in size, yielding 8.1 cm in length, 4.4 cm in height and 6 cm in the wheelbase. The 2-door also gives up the 177-horsepower

4-cylindre engine but has access to the 190-horsepower and the V6. It is offered in four

trim levels: EX, EX-L, EX-L V6 and EX-L V6 with manual transmission. A 2.4-litre

4-cylindre powers the first two, and a 3.5-litre V6 the other two.

Interior and trunk

Access to the front is easy, but the wide doorsills collect dirt. The seats are very comfortable and maintain the occupant snugly in place. The driving position is very good thanks to the tilt and telescoping steering column and height-adjustable seat. Headroom and legroom are good. Access to the rear is difficult. The seat is comfortable for just two. The middle section is uninviting, especially on long trips, mainly because the central tunnel leaves little foot room. Legroom is generous but headroom is tight for tall people. The seatback folds in one piece, which is not really practical, and with an upward angle to the front, not flat to the floor. The trunk is roomy but cannot accommodate large items because of a lack of height. In cars equipped with a navigation system DVD player, the player is mounted at the top of the trunk, reducing trunk height even more and leaving the player exposed to damage.

The trunk opening is average in size.

Convenience and safety features

The cabin is very well finished in quality materials, but with lots of plastic. Sound isolation is better than before, but road noise and wind noise are still much too intrusive.

Good storage spaces abound.

The ergonomic design of the controls is less than optimal. There are way too many control buttons on the central stack, the buttons for the efficient heating system are scattered on each side of the stack, and the steering wheel masks some buttons placed left of the stack. The climate control system does not have the power needed to cool the cabin adequately. Everything is illuminated at night. The click of the turn signals is barely audible. The windshield is deeply recessed from the front roof pillars, which collect and accumulate snow. The build-up prevents the wipers from reaching their full sweep and can force the wiper motor. Snow can also easily block the washer nozzles under the edge of the hood. Safety features include a sophisticated body structure, six airbags (two front, two dual-chamber side, two head curtain), five head restraints (both active in front), four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, a stability control system and good headlights. The head restraints do not adjust high enough for tall people. The two-chamber side impact airbags function as follows: a large chamber protects the chest, whereas a second, smaller chamber inserted inside the first better protects the pelvis and lower back. The view is good in all directions except on a three-quarter rear angle, and towards the back, making it difficult to judge distances when backing up. In U.S. government crash tests, the Accord coupe rated five stars out of five for front-occupant protection in a frontal impact, and four stars for front-occupant protection in a side crash. It earned five stars for rear-passenger protection in a side impact, and five stars for rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the coupe a Good rating, its best, for driver protection in a frontal offset collision, and for all-occupant protection in a side crash.

Engine and transmission

The 3.5-litre V6 outputs 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque, for lively performance at all times. Acceleration and pickup are quick, smooth and instantly responsive. The engine is also flexible enough that the driver is not obliged to shift gears for nothing. This exquisite V6 is a model for its smoothness, flexibility and performance, not to mention its wonderful sonority. It meets Tier2/Bin5 emissions control standards. The six-speed manual transmission is crisp and easy to shift, with relatively short throws. It is well geared. The clutch is quite firm and even a bit brusque at take-up.

On the road

The four-wheel independent suspension provides a very smooth ride on all types of pavement. Suppleness and firmness are very finely tuned to yield a successful combination of comfort and road holding. The Accord has a tenacious grip in curves. The suspension has a solid feel. The power steering is well weighted, stable, precise and relatively quick. It transmits very little road feel. The turning radius is small. The brakes lack power somewhat in panic stops but are good in normal driving and resist well to fade.

Inspection

In one of our inspection at a CAA-Quebec technical centre, we saw that the Accord is well assembled, with a sturdy structure. The middle of the underside has no rust proofing. Debris can get through large openings under the front bumper and damage the air conditioner condenser and power steering cooler. After just 15,000 kilometres, the condenser on our tester was already consi derably damaged. The emergency brake cables are low and easy to snag. The overhead camshafts are chain driven.

Conclusion

The Accord coupe with the V6 engine and manual transmission artfully combines inspired handling, very comfortable front seats, an exquisite V6 and a truly practical format. Deficient sound isolation tarnishes what is otherwise a glowing report, and it is really unfortunate, because this car could easily compete with other, much more expensive coupes. PROS: roominess, comfort, V6 performance, smooth ride, road holding, good manual transmission CONS: disappointing sound isolation, one-piece rear seatback, washer nozzles under edge of hood, ergonomic design of controls, lack of trunk height, wide doorsills collect dirt
