SAFETY & SCHOOL SECURITY

Golden West continues to be a "closed campus". Gates open and supervision begins at 8:45am.

does not arrive prior to 8:45. Again, students may not arrive earlier than 8:45 unless participating

in an authorized school activity. Please plan accordingly. As a closed campus from 8:00-4:15pm, only students and staff are allowed inside the school campus during these hours. See visits info. All students must enter/exit through the back gate unless he/she rides the bus, has a pass to enter/exit the front or will be picked up/dropped off by parent/car in the front. Students arriving in the front will enter the gate near the gym. Students only may enter the gates at 8:45 when school site assistants are available to supervise. TyK & Kindergarten students along with parent/guardian should be waiting in the designated area. For the safety of all, parents and guardians may not wait on campus. Those that choose to wait with his/her child in the morning for the warning bell must do so in the designated wait areas near the back gate or in front of the school near the gym area. All parents/guardians waiting in the back area need to exit as the gates will be locked beginning at 9:00. All gates on campus will be locked upon the start of school to restrict unauthorized visitors from the campus. Our school site assistants and staff will diligently monitor the campus. Parents/guardians wanting to meet with a teacher during closed hours should make an the hours of 8:00 and 4:15. Teachers may not be available afterschool until 3:35 depending on afterschool duty. If you have an appointment to meet with a teacher during closed hours, please check in through the office prior to coming on school grounds. Visitors will be issued a visitor name badge that must be worn and readily visible throughout the visit. Visitors may not be on the playground or waiting near buildings inside the campus at any time. Unauthorized visitors are subject to State

Law under the Penal Code.

At the start and end of the day, parents/guardians may wait at the designated area in back of the school or in front of the school near the gym area away from gate. Siblings may want to designate a spot near the exit to meet prior to exiting the campus. Students exiting the front will do so near the gym. emergency, please contact the office before 2:30pm. We cannot guarantee delivery of the message after that time. 4

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

school. Poor school attendance is one of the primary reasons that students are not successful in school. Therefore, it is important that parents/guardians insist on regular and punctual school attendance. By law students must be in school every day unless ill and contagious. Many families an unexcused absence. All absences or tardies must have a note or call within five days. Absences or tardies that might otherwise be excused will be marked as unexcused if we do not receive a phone call or note from the school attendance line to report the absence and reason or to send a note upon return to school. Please bring a note from the medical or dental office if you have an appointment. If we do not receive a note or call the day of an absence, an automatic phone notification of the absence will be sent home. Phone notification is to ensure that parents are aware of students missing school. Being on time is a life-long responsibility. It is expected in high school and most certainly in the world of work. Habits begin early in life. The good habits students learn in elementary school will benefit them throughout their lives. Please help your child be prepared and confident for the day. Ensure that your child has all materials needed and afterschool plans are plans made in advance.

STUDENT TARDINESS AND ATTENDANCE POLICY

School instruction begins promptly at 9:00. The bell to enter class rings at 8:55am. Students not in their seat at the 9:00am bell are tardy. Tardies will be recorded by the teacher up until 9:15. After 9:15, the office will record the tardy and students must receive a pass from the office staff. Students arriving tardy must enter through the office as the gates will be closed. Students that have an excessive tardy (30 min. or more) should be checked in by a parent/guardian. In the event your child is absent, please refer to the MUSD First Day Packet for justifiable excused absences per state law. Students are allowed one excused absence or tardy per month or a total of ten for the entire school year. Parents/guardians should to the best of their ability schedule vacations, medical appointments, etc., outside the school day. Bringing your child back to school after a medical appointment, even for just one period, sends a clear message that education is important.

process for possible referral to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB). Habitual tardiness or absence

will require an attendance review conference with parent/guardian and child. Referral to the Student

Attendance Review Board may result in your child being placed on a SARB contract, which authorizes the

students must report it to the teacher immediately. If a device is lost or stolen at school, students must

immediately report it to the teacher. If a device is lost or stolen at home, students must notify the teacher

Please demonstrate good character for our students and discuss your concerns with school staff away from students. Any visitor using foul language, threats, aggressive mannerisms, etc. with students or adults on campus will be reported to the Manteca Police Department and/or given a stay away order. Unauthorized visitors are subject to State Law under the Penal Code. Please model self-control of emotions and actions while on campus.

STUDENT VISITORS

Student visitors (under 18) are generally not permitted to visit unless there are special

circumstances and they have written permission from the principal.

RESTRICTED VISITATION

An administrator will refuse to admit a visitor on campus if he or she believes that the individual's presence or behavior may interrupt the school environment, instruction or operation or if his or her visit jeopardizes the security, health or safety of students and staff or has the potential of causing property damage. 7

School & HOME Communication

COMMUNICATION FOLDER -- STUDY SKILL PLANNER (calendar) A communication folder is provided to all students in grades TK-3 as a tool to assist you and your child in organizing homework and home/school communications. Please ensure it is checked and brought to school daily as a mandatory tool. Students in 4-8th will be issued a school planner (calendar). It is a mandatory instructional tool. Other grade levels may also provide calendars to help students and parents/guardians track homework assignments, due dates and to utilize as a communication tool between home and school. Replacements of the Communication Folder and Study Skill Planner will be made available for a small fee.

HOMEWORK/Make Up

Homework helps develop responsibility in students and gives parents an opportunity to be involved with their child's education. The intent of homework is to develop self-discipline, efficient study habits, and practice of skills learned. Parents/guardians are encouraged to look over their child's homework for neatness, completeness, following of directions, and understanding of the assignment. Help your child succeed: Provide a study space and set a daily recommendation (i.e. total homework given for all subjects) by grade level is as follows:

K-1 15-20 minutes

2-3 30-40 minutes

4-6 45-60 min. per day/or 225-300 min. per week for all classes combined

7-8 60-120 min. per day/or 300-600 min. per week for all classes combined

Homework is often an integral part of the student's grade. It is the responsibility of the student to request and complete schoolwork (homework or classwork) missed because of approved or excused absences. Parents/guardians may request homework whenever the student is absent from school for more than one day. Parents/guardians are asked to give the school 24-hour notice to enable the teacher(s) sufficient time to assemble any make-up work. Students who miss schoolwork or homework because of truancy or other deliberate actions should not expect to receive credit for missed work or time missed, nor should they expect to take any missed examinations for credit.

HOME INSTRUCTION

If a student will be absent from school due to injury or illness for more than two weeks, parents/guardians may request home instruction for the student. An application must be completed with a written recommendation for home instruction signed by a physician. 8
