Reuters reported this past week that Scarabeo 9, the Italian owned, Chinese built semi- submersible that is currently undergoing final tests and modifications in Singapore's KeppelFels shipyards, will not be in Cuban waters until June-July of this year. Expectations had been for Scarabeo 9 to arrive in Cuba early this year. The 53,000-ton Scarabeo 9 is a state-of-the-art, sixth generation Frigstad D90 ultra deepwater drilling semi-submersible exploration and development unit. It is capable of working in up to 12,000 feet of water depth and with a 50,000 ft (9.5 miles) drilling depth capacity. The semi-submersible will have accommodations for the full-time support of up to 200 workers. Semi-submersibles float on the surface of the ocean on top of huge, submerged pontoons. A powerful DP3 system with eight 4.3-MW azimuth thrusters will enable the SC 9 to quickly evacuate location in case of hurricanes, even though she is rated to withstand maximum winds of 115 mph (100 knots) and maximum wave height of 88 feet. Dynamic positioning (DP) is a computer/GPS controlled system to automatically maintain the semi- submersible position and heading by using propellers and thrusters. As drilling depths become more challenging, conventional sea-bed anchoring - usually six to 12 anchors tethered by strong chains and wire cables - is no longer possible.

Scarabeo 9: Arrival delayed

until summer

The SC 9 job is to drill down into the ocean's floor to find oil reservoirs. The part of the drill that

extends below the deck and through the water is called the riser. The riser allows for drilling fluids

to move between the ocean floor and the rig. Engineers lower a drill string - a series of pipes designed to drill down to the oil deposit - through the riser. At the sea floor is the blowout preventer (BOP). The blowout preventer has a pair of hydraulically-

powered clamps that can close off the pipe leading up to the rig in the case of a blowout. As the rig

drills down, engineers must add more pipe to the drill string.

To add stability to the well, metal casings will be used in order to keep the well from collapsing in

on itself. Each casing is lined with cement walls. Casings get narrower as the well gets deeper, using smaller drill bits as the well's depth increases. When and if the SC 9 hits a commercial oil find, the well must be sealed to prepare it for a

production rig (FPSO). The engineers will use a pair of plugs to seal off the well bore; a bottomMOST COMMENTED

plug near the oil deposit and a top plug to cap the oil well. Then the well is ready for a production

rig to take over. The SC 9 is scheduled to drill half a dozen exploratory prospects for international oil companies operating in Cuba such as Spain's Repsol, India's ONGC and Malyasia's Petronas. The day rate for the SC 9 is about $403,000, reflecting a rig-only cost for the 30-45 day project of about $15 to $20 million; total exploratory costs of these types of ultra deepwater prospects easily surpass the $50 million threshold. The Liberia-flagged Scarabeo 9 will do the 30 to 45-day transit from Singapore to waters north of Havana on board a semi-submersible heavy lift vessel specifically designed to carry ultra large/heavy loads in the high seas. Jorge R. Piñón was president of Amoco Corporate Development Company Latin America from

1991 to 1994; in this role he was responsible for managing the business relationship between

Amoco Corp. and regional state oil companies, energy ministries and energy regulatory agencies. This entry was posted on Monday, January 10th, 2011 at 12:15 pm and is filed under Business.
