Der Franzose personally - The engine to get back to the roots.

Since 30 years, he fell in love in the vintage cars and made a career out of his passion. In the following inter-

view, Ansgar Olberding, managing director of Der Franzose Automotiltechnik tells us more about himself and

the passion for the french vintage vehicles.

Since 30 years, he was wrenching on vintage cars. Already at the tender age of 20, he had a former hen-house

full with cars which were out of order. Most of them were french one but there were also some italian ones.

Later on, he ? nally had a garage, carports and halls. However, since years a dream came true - he has managed

to get his own small personal workshop on his courtyard.

It is a small cosy workshop built with a swedish style with two lifting ramps. It even has a radiator. As they have

two dogs, so one of them remains with him while he is wrenching and if he was a brave guy, his lovely wife

calls him for co? ee and home-backed cake.

He enjoys those Sunday morning where he can switch on his favourite music and inspect those old Œcarts if

there is any Œoperations to be done. He, even excuses himself for this expression as there are some persons

Nevertheless, he considers those vehicles as time-machine! It reminds him of the young days. It is in fact a

journey in the past and being on trip was simply wonderful, without any Œbeeps or any complicated but-

tons regulating the temperature automatically against his will.

Even after four apprenticeships, he got the feeling that none of those jobs really impressed him. Thus, he

decided to do something where he could have fun doing it. He realized that he could make a career out of

spare parts for french vintage cars. It was indeed a tough time at the beginning where there was not really a big earning. Nowadays, the

team of Der Franzose consists of 24 employees, almost 40.000 customers spread in 80 countries and with

1.000.000 spare parts in the warehouse (one of the biggest warehouse worldwide for french classic cars),

customer service with technical advice in french, english and german and other correspondences without

technical advice additionally in italian, spanish, turkish and russian. A branch in Paris has been established since 2010 and from the 24 employees, four of them are french native speaker who do their maximum to assist appr. 8000 customers in France.

The customers are spread worldwide and the team do their best to assist them by providing them of the

required spare parts. Over 2.700 parts are dispatched daily, whether it is a screw, a ? lter, clutch sets, body panels or even chassis for the 2CV. Therefore, he is grateful to the whole involved sta? for their team spirit which permits a successful and smooth operation, starting from the incoming goods department, sales and customer service department upto the shipping department. Thanks to the modern logistic technology which enables a ? exible management. Even though they are dealing with vintage cars, they indeed need the modern and sophisticated techno- logy to improve the service. Thus, a new high-grade 3D-Scanner has been acquired for the measurement of some very rare parts to thousandths milimeter for digitalization later on. technology. Nevertheless the way to this success was a long one. After years of hard work with 65 working hours per week but still no earnings and the anxiety of failing, he did not give up. For sure, it was a hard time but it was worthwhile! Today, he sees things with a much relaxed aspect ... a reliable team and thus a much balanced workload. And as we asked him about his goals, he is not interested in being the leading company in the world or even of owning a villa or the most expensive cars. His personal goal is to enjoy life to the fullest and enough leisure time! He only wants to have enough privacy and the possibility to cut o? from all the modern media which are having too much importance nowadays in our lives. Anyway, he does not even have a good cellular network and has a very low internet connection at home. What an irony for someone who sells spare parts via a website! successful, even if it lasts years. Anyway, enough about business. Today is Sunday and he is looking forward to a nice walk with his wife and the dogs. Later on, he will attend a tractor get-together and will have a good chat with some other familiar fans. Still some engines to get back to the roots! To conclude this nice story, we wish him and his team further successful years and a nice trip!

Depending on the marketing purposes, the radiator, the heater, the electrical systems and the brakes are all not the

same. Is it built for France, Mid-Europe or Scandinavia?

As you see, without your help, we cannot achieve miracles. If you have done good research before calling, it can only be

the detail which causes the headaches. Most of the time for Citroën 2CV and DS, it is quite clear enough to know which parts be-

long to which cars but the complicated part of all this applies to Renault and Peugeot. It often happens that some parts are from

di? erent manufacturers which makes things much complicated for the Technical documentation.

It could happened that various original parts have been replaced by reproduction ones by the previous owners and that the actu-

al owner of the car is not informed about that. We already had situations where the fromt brakes were from ATE and the rear ones

from Lucas and all this connected with metrical and inches bolts.

It will be a pleasure for us to help all our customers with the Technical issues but it is not that easy nowadays to get everybody

served. So if you do have a good know-how in automotive engineering, speak and write english ? uently, do manage with tele-

phone and computer, you are well acquainted with the rules and procedures of the EFTA countries, Net and Gross, so get your

1988 - 25 years ago

The architect, Rainer Braunwald established ŒDen

Entenmacher (The 2CV Maker). At that time,

the 2 CV was still being built and seemed to be more interesting than the new coming cars. As the cabriolets were not yet been detected on developing and selling a conversion set for the

2CV. After loads of di? culties, the conversion kit

has ? nally been approved. Number of customer in 1988: One! 1989

The kit has been approved. The ? rst brochure was

copied and cut manually. Three kits have been sold with an annual turnover of 5000 marks. 1990
The ŒEntenmacher keeps on growing, develop- ping the wide mudguards, the wheel rims as well as the exhaust pipes. The cabriolet was ? tted with

295/15 tyres at the rear axle. Annual turnover:

18,500 marks

1991

The ? rst catalogue has been printed including a

variety of tunning accessories for the 2CV. Num- ber of customers: 40. Turnover: 50,000 marks. 1992

More than 150 clients have been acquired. The

number of spare parts keep on expanding, gear box, sports shock absorber, repair sheets.

Purchase of new 2CV from Belgium. It seemed

that only germans were still interested in buying those 2CV which no one else wanted. Up to now, the ŒEntenmacher has done only de? cit.

1993 - vor 20 Jahren

Ansgar and Stephanie Olberding took over the

ŒEntenmacher at a purchase price of 13,000

using a garage as warehouse for all the spare parts. 1994

Repositioning the company, putting more em-

phasis on selling more spare parts und accesso- ries and less tuning. Next move: a former hen- house is being used as warehouse and opening of a garage to o? er a better service to the clients.

Annual turnover: 120,000 marks

Smoothly getting to normal business o? ering
