Working within the Faculty of Literature, the candidate will be required to work with B.A and M.A students, as well as

students preparing national exams in Higher Education (Agrégation, CAPES). The position will also involve educational

activities aimed at secondary schools, promoting the link between high school and university, whilst responding to

the strong demand from students at the University of Strasbourg, who are particularly interested in the cross-cutting

theme of ecology (as shown by the many M.A and PhD projects submitted in recent years).

Responding to this double perspective, the candidate will be required to participate in Open Days for both the

University of Strasbourg and the Faculty of Literature. The successful candidate will also need to respond to the

regular call for projects from the vice-president of Secondary/Higher Education responsible for the transition from

high-school to University. The candidate will propose a "new approach to post-bac guidance in Alsace" which could

be centred on the relationship between literature and ecology and on the theme of the "ecological transition",

supported by the Grand Est Region. The Junior Professor will also be able to take charge of supervising dissertations

(Master's degrees in literature and research, master's degrees in Publishing and in Ethics) specifically devoted to

these subjects. (2)

Within the framework of the University Diploma attached to the ITI LETHICA, the successful candidate will be required

to develop innovative teaching practices according to the modules provided for in the syllabus (interdisciplinary

seminar; laboratory of cases of conscience; organization of an autumn school devoted, for example, to the ethical

and aesthetic issues of the climate crisis; creation of MOOC capsules).

Language(s) of Teaching: The language of teaching is primarily French. A C2 level in French will therefore be required.

Research profile/project

Although the study of the links between literature and ecology has developed strongly in the United States under the

name of Green studies, it is still little represented in France and is often confined to the study of contemporary

literature. ECO/LIT aims to change this situation by demonstrating the extension and centrality of this specialised

field. Two main ideas will therefore guide the scientific project:

(1) Literature plays a crucial role in the representation of the world, but also in the transformation of mentalities and

behaviours: if many citizens are now aware of the need for an ecological transition, this relationship to the

environment is established as much through daily actions and commitments as through the imagination. It is,

therefore, essential to give pride of place to works which, using the tools of literary analysis as much as cultural

studies, measure the impact of this imagination and consider the physical environment (understood in the broad

sense as nature, but also as the animal world) in relation to its presence in texts.

(2) The preoccupation with nature, although it has taken on a new importance today, is not the prerogative of the

last few decades, or even of Western modernity.

The scientific project of the successful candidate will thus aim to show the transversality of the issues dealt with,

and will also focus on the literary manifestations of an ecological awareness that predates the 20th century, or that

is external to the European space. The research activities will comprise three complementary strands:

Presentation of the research unit (Literary Configurations, UR 1337) and of the interdisciplinary thematic institute

LETHICA (literatures, ethics and arts)

Bringing together all the research on French, Francophone, general and comparative literature at the University of

Strasbourg (CELAR, CERIEL and Europe des Lettres), the Configurations littéraires laboratory is committed to

interdisciplinary and international projects, within which the appointed junior professor will find his or her place. The

studies devoted to the relationship between ecology and literature stem from a transdisciplinary reflection, at the

crossroads of human sciences (sociology, anthropology, philosophy and ethics), political and militant commitment,

and hard sciences. The work of the Junior Professor will thus contribute to the "Borders and Transfers" axis of the

CL laboratory, and also the "Literature and History" axis, devoted to the representation of historical events. In fact,

although most ecopoetic and ecocritical studies currently focus on contemporary Western literature, one of the

challenges of the junior professorship, in line with the unit's scientific project, will be to reflect both a chronological

and geographical perspective, in order to show that the ecopoetic approach can renew our perception of the

literatures of ancient and modern centuries, enrich our representation of non-Western spaces, and thus highlight

their fundamental and ancient contributions to thinking about the relationship between man and nature or the living.

The junior professor will also be part of the strategy implemented by the University of Strasbourg with the creation

of interdisciplinary thematic institutes (ITI), which aim to develop a research ecosystem in line with the current and

future concerns of science and society, whilst strengthening the research-training link by promoting innovative

teaching practices (https://iti.unistra.fr). The junior professor will contribute more specifically to the dynamism of

the ITI LETHICA (literatures, ethics and arts, https://lethica.unistra.fr/lethica/presentation). Supported by

Configurations littéraires, LETHICA brings together about a hundred national and international researchers who are

exploring four themes (moral revolutions, making a case, transparency and secrecy, triage:

https://lethica.unistra.fr/recherche/projet-de-recherche). These themes are prone to study the relationship between

man and nature. The ecological transition (whether it concerns our relationship with the environment or the more

specific question of animal husbandry and animal rights) will thus be considered in terms of a "moral revolution", i.e.

as a rapid change in sensitivity and behaviour, brought about not by the statement of a reasoning but by an ethical

awareness and by an emotional discharge, of which literature can be one of the vectors.
