Celebrating Diversity

M edia, in all of its forms, has immense power to shape our ideas and influence how we see others - and how we see ourselves. Accurate, authentic representation can break down barriers, open us to new viewpoints, create power ful role models and even be a source of inspiration. When we have a level of understanding about each other, we can learn, collaborate and cooperate. Serving the American public in all of its diversity is a core part of the mission of public media.Every Indigenous character is voiced by an Indigenous actor, and we're working together with Alaska Native screen- writers and producers to bring the series authentically to life.

Molly of Denali

has a reach of more than 41 million people, including over 710,000 Indigenous/

Alaska Native viewers. It has had

4 million podcast video streams and

more than 21 million games played online and via the PBS Kids Games app (see page 19).

Princess says she grew up not seeing

anyone who looked like her represented in the media. Or if they were, it was a negative stereotype. But now, she says, "just having a young Native kid seeing another Native person on TV opens up so many doors that say, 'I didn't know we were allowed to be there.'" By doing the show, she said her kids and other

Native children can say "Oh, I can do

that, too." This month for National

Native America Heritage Month, we're

proud to continue the Native tradition of storytelling (see cover story, page 14).

One of the GBH programs that reflects

that mission is our children's series Molly of Denali, whose main character is a resourceful 10-year-old Gwich'in/

Koyukon/Dena'ina Athabascan girl who

takes young viewers on adventures that introduce them to Native Alaskan culture while teaching literacy skills. The pro gram was just awarded one of media's highest honors, a George Foster Peabody

Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.

It also received the 2020 Television

Critics Association Award. We are

immensely proud of this production and the inclusive approach taken by our

Executive Producer Dorothea Gillim and

Creative Producer Princess Daazhraii

Johnson and their team working with

Alaska Native partners at all levels of the

series, on camera and o?.
