2. Early Dutch inscription to recto of back endpaper indicating that this book was in a Dutch or Flemish monastery (aen covent van sinte pauwel).

3. Modern bibliographical annotation to endpaper in small capitals.

4. Recent maritime bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FFEP verso. Hayhurst was a book collector from Lancashire (1929-2016).

Rare corrected edition of this book containing

three extant texts, namely 'Vierighe Meditatien', 'Alleen-spraecken', and 'Handt-Boecxken', are all attributed to Augustine but actually have a far more complex authorial origin (Dietz 2012, p. 174).

Printed in the Calvinist Netherlands, it has

been suggested that 'Vierighe Meditatien etc' is 'perhaps an illustration of a gradual shift towards a more tolerant religious climate' (Dietz 2012, p. 194), which makes this book especially interesting. 'Vierighe Meditatien etc' was originally printed in Antwerp by Symon Cock in 1547 and then again in 1548. This corrected edition, purportedly improved through comparison to a 'Latijnsch exemplaer', was produced in 1631 by the Catholic printer and publisher Pieter Jacobsz

Paedts (1587-1657).

Paedts' 1631 edition of 'Vierighe Meditatien

etc', especially the illustrations within it, has previously attracted attention (Dietz 2011 and

2012, Stronks 2011). In the predominantly

Calvinist Dutch Republic where Paedts was

printing, the production of books containing

Catholic imagery was problematic. In 1628

when Paedts produced an illustrated copy of 'Pia Desideria' written by the Jesuit Herman Hugo, he protected himself by spuriously attributing the imprint to Hendrick Aertssens in Antwerp

(see STCV 6654149 for a digitized copy).

Three years later, Paedts reused some of

Christoffel van Sichem's woodcuts from 'Pia

Desideria' in his 'Vierighe Meditatien etc' (Dietz

2012, pp. 177-91; Stronks 2011, paras 25-26).

omits his location (Dietz 2012 p. 192, Stronks

2012, para 25 and note 33). This omission can

be seen on the second and third title pages in title page has been shaved).

This particular copy of 'Vierighe Meditatien etc'

is notable for the remarkably well-preserved loop are the only ones in the collection not attributed to Augustine.
