The code list applies to four EU LFS variables:
▪ Nationality (NATIONAL), ▪ Country of birth (COUNTRYB), ▪ Country of place of work (COUNTRYW) and ▪ Country of residence one year before survey (COUNTR1Y). For European countries only individual alpha-2 country codes are valid, whereas for countries outside Europe numerical codes for country groupings (geographical regions) are also available. Those numerical codes are however for use in exceptional cases only - coding of individual country codes should be considered standard.The countries of the European Union are listed according to their official order, and the
countries outside Europe are grouped in geographical regions and further sorted according to the alphabetical order of their country codes. The codes are mainly based on the ISO country codification1. However, there exist some
small deviations, e.g. for the United Kingdom the code UK instead of GB is used. The three latter codes may however be used only if a coding according to current borders is not possible at all, and in any case exclusively for COUNTRYB. With these extensions, the LFS country codification list should be nearly fully in line with thecensus list, the only exception being the fact that, for consistency reasons with the 2010
version, it still offers two additional codes not available in the census list 4: ▪ PR - Puerto Rico, ▪ PS - Palestine.Changes introduced in the 2012 version:
- Greece: the country code changes from GR to EL in line with NUTS 2010 - Sudan: split into SD for Sudan and SS for South Sudan4 These codes can be merged with others for analysis purposes later.
