The Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat is a vital interface between global policies in the economic, social and environmental spheres and national action. The Department works in three main interlinked areas: (i) it compiles, generates and analyses a wide range of economic, social and environmental data and information on which States Members of the United Nations draw to review common problems and to take stock of policy options; (ii) it facilitates the negotiations of Member States in many intergovernmental bodies on joint courses of action to address ongoing or emerging global challenges; and (iii) it advises interested Governments on the ways and means of translating policy frameworks developed in

United Nations conferences and summits into

programmes at the country level and, through technical

assistance, helps build national capacities. Le Département des affaires économiques et sociales du

utilisées dans cette publication 671 v INTRODUCTION This is the forty-ninth in a series of annual compilations of statistics on world industry designed to meet both the general demand for information of this kind and the special requirements of the United

Nations and related international bodies.

The first seven editions in this series were published under the title The Growth of World Industry and the next eight editions under the title Yearbook of Industrial Statistics. From the 1981 edition until the 1991 edition, the publication was published as Industrial Statistics Yearbook, Volume II, Commodity Production Statistics. Beginning with the 1992 edition, the title of the publication was changed to Industrial Commodity Statistics Yearbook as the result of a decision made by the United Nations Statistical Commission at its twenty-seventh session to discontinue, effective 1994, publication of the Industrial Statistics Yearbook, Volume I, General Industrial Statistics by the Statistics Division of the United Nations. The United Nations Industrial

Development Organization (UNIDO) has become

responsible for the collection and dissemination of general industrial statistics while the Statistics Division of the United Nations continues to be responsible for industrial commodity production statistics.

Starting with the 2005 edition, this Yearbook

publishes data based on the full set of commodities using the United Nations List of Industrial Products, which was established in 2005. This list replaces an older commodity list, developed in 1971, that was used for previous Yearbook editions up to and including the 2003 edition. Also beginning with the

2005 edition, the Yearbook has been expanded to

publish data not only in physical quantities, but also in monetary value of production. It is therefore organized in two volumes, namely Volume I: Physical

Quantity Data and Volume II: Monetary Value Data.

This edition of the Yearbook contains data on

production of industrial commodities by countries or areas throughout the world, as available. The statistics refer to the ten-year period 2006-2015 for about 200 countries and areas, based on a list of about 600 commodities.

Data reported for the products in the Yearbook

reflect value and volume of production sold during the survey period, which is defined as the production carried out at some time, which has been sold (invoiced) during the reference period.

The data cover products produced by mining,

manufacturing and electricity and gas units, i.e. units classified in sections B, C, and D of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 4, whether as primary or secondary production. The data does not cover output of units classified outside ISIC sections B, C, and D. For example, beef produced on a farm is not included (this constitutes output of agriculture); while beef produced in a slaughterhouse is included in the scope (this constitutes output of manufacturing). This treatment reflects the continuation of the "industrial production" concept used in the previous editions of the Yearbook.

Selection and coding of commodities

The selection of industrial commodities is

based on the United Nations List of Industrial

Products, established in 2005.

The List is comprised of a selected set of products intended for data collection on industrial production. It is not intended to represent an exhaustive list of industrial or manufacturing products. Products have been selected on the basis of their overall importance and their importance as outputs of individual ISIC industries in the world economy. Moreover, a consolidated list on contract processing services for industrial products has been included.

Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding

System (HS) 2002.

The coding of this List is based on the CPC

Version 1.1. The first five digits of the codes used in the List correspond to the CPC Version 1.1 subclass that includes the commodity in question. A dash (-) and sixth digit have been added to indicate whether the product corresponds to the complete CPC subclass (in which case this digit is "0") or whether the product represents only a portion of the CPC subclass (in which case this digit is a running number "1", "2", etc.).
