MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT & HIGHWAYS

Road transport is the dominant mode of transport in lndia both in terms of share in goods and passenger traffic and in terms of contribution to the national economy. iransportation by roads has scored over other modes of transport because of easy accessibility, flexibility of operations, door-to-door service and reliability' Sustained economic growth, improved road infrastructure and increased disposable income of households have led to the rising demand for road transport. The number of total registered vehicles has recorded a trend growth rate of 9.8 percent during the last ten"years (2005 lo2015) and as on 3'l't March,2015 there were 210'0 millioi registered vehicles lndia.
