What has changed in Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 for 2019, 2020 and 2021? The syllabus has been revised for rst examination in 2019. Some chan ges are signicant. You are strongly advised to read the whole syllabus before planning your teaching programme. Combining this with other syllabuses

Candidates cannot take Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Biology (0970), Camb ridge IGCSE (9-1) Chemistry (0971), Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Physics (0972) or Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Co-ordin ated Sciences (Double Award) (0973) with this syllabus.

The syllabus content has been completely revised, updated and reorganise d to align with the single Science syllabuses (Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610, Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 062

0 and Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625).

Section 7. Appendix

The appendix has been revised, updated and reorganised to align with the single Science syllabuses (Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610, Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 and Cambridge IGCSE P hysics 0625). Signicant changes to the appendix are indicated by black vertical li nes either side of the text.

Changes to assessment

Paper 5, Practical Test, 1 hour 15 minutes, 40 marks -The number of marks for Paper 5 Practical Test is now 40 marks. The duration of Paper 5 Practical Test is now 1 hour 15 minutes. Paper 5: Practical Test will now typically consist of 4 exercises, only

3 of which will require the use of apparatus.

One question on Paper 5 will assess the skill of planning. This question will be based on any one of the sciences, which could be: Biology, Chemistry or Physics and may vary between each examination series. Paper 6, Alternative to Practical, 1 hour, 40 marks -The number of marks for Paper 6 Alternative to Practical is now 40 marks The duration of Paper 6 Alternative to Practical is unchanged. One question on Paper 6 will assess the skill of planning. This question will be based on any one of the sciences, which could be: Biology, Chemistry or Physics and may vary between each examination series. Signicant changes to the assessment are indicated by black vertical lines either side of the text. In addition to reading the syllabus, teachers should refer to the update d specimen papers.

Prior learning

We recommend that learners who are beginning this course should previous ly have studied a science syllabus such as that of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme or equi valent national educational frameworks. Learners should also have adequate mathematical skills for t he content contained in this syllabus (see the

Content

The syllabus content that follows is divided into three sections: Biolog y (B1-B12), Chemistry (C1-C12) and

Physics (P1-P6).

Candidates must study all three sections.

Candidates can either follow the Core syllabus only, or they can follow the Extended syllabus which includes both the Core and the Supplement. Candidates aiming for grades A* to C s hould follow the Extended syllabus. It is important that, throughout this course, teachers should make candi dates aware of the relevance of the concepts studied to everyday life, and to the natural and man-made world s.
