CHAPTER IIITHEORETICALFRAMEWORK3.1 IntrinsicAspectsIntrinsicaspectistheaspectcomingfromtheinsideoftheliterarywork,andthisaspectisused tosupportthestory.AccordingtoWellekandWarrenabouttheintrinsicaspect,"thenaturalandsensiblestarting pointforworkinliteraryscholarshipisthe interpretationandanalysisof the worksof literaturethemselves."(1949: 139).Petersonalsostatesthereare someintrinsicaspects:"CharacterandCharacterization,Plot,Pointof View(P.O.V),Setting,Theme,Symbolism,Style,ToneandIrony."(1999:1).Meanwhile,Conflictisalsoneededinaliteraryworkbecause"thesurfaceexcitementrequiredincommercialfictionandthesignificantmeaningfoundinliterary fictionariseoutofsomesortofconflict." (Perrine,1998:42).Inthisthesis,theanalysiswillfocusoncharacter,conflict and setting.3.1.1CharacterCharacterisanimportantpartinaliterarywork.According toPotter,"characterisanactorwhodescribestheeventoffictioninordertomaketheline ofstory." (1967:1).Healsostatesthat"characterisabasicelementinmuchimaginativeliteratureandtherefore,theymerittheconsiderableattentionpaidto them."(1967: 7).Another opinioncomesfrom Peterson, "charactersare

10

the"people"intexts,andcharacterizationistheauthor"spresentationanddevelopment ofcharacters."(1999:1).3.1.2ConflictConflict,according toPerrine,is"aclashofactions,ideas,desires,orwills."(1998:42).Perrineexplainsthetypesofconflict.Thereare threetypesofconflicts:1. Conflictofpersonagainsthimselforherself(someelementintheirownnature).2. Conflictofpersonagainstperson(whencharactersarepittedagainstsome other personorgroup ofpersons)3. Conflictofpersonagainstenvironment(someexternalforce-physicalnature, society,"fate")Inanyofthesecases,theconflictmaybephysical,mental,emotionalormoral (1998: 42).Perrinealso addsthat:1.Insomestories,theconflictissingle,clear-cut,andeasilyidentifiable.In others, itis multiple,various,and subtle.2. Apersonmaybeinconflictwithotherindividuals,withsocialnormsornature,andwithherselforhimselfallat thesametime,andsometimes maybeinvolved inconflictwithout beingawareofit.(1998: 42)

11

AnotheropinioncomingfromMeyer,"Externalconflictmay placetheprotagonistinoppositiontoanotherindividual, natureorsociety....Conflictmayalsobeinternal,suchacasesomemoralorpsychologicalissuemustberesolvedwithintheprotagonist."(1990: 45).Itcanbeassumedthat,conflictisneededtomaketensioninastoryormakeplotmoreinterestingby puttheoppositionbetweenthecharacters,thecharactertothesocietyorwithinthecharacteritself.3.1.3SettingSetting isneededinaliterary workbecauseitwillhelpthereadertounderstandthe descriptionof the place,the timeandeventhe surroundingsina story.ItisstatedbyMeyerthatsettingis"thecontextinwhichactionofastoryoccurs."(1990: 107). Thetypes ofsettingare:1.SettingofPlace:itisthephysicalenvironmentlikehouse,room,street,etc.whichanevent ofastorytakes place.2.SettingofTime:itis timeorperiod inwhich theaction takes placeandcantellthereaderwhen thestoryhappens.3.SettingofSocialEnvironment:Itdescribesthesocialconditionissuesrelatedtothesociallifeofthecharacterwithinthenovel.Ittellsthereaderaboutthesituationaroundthecharacter like tradition,pointofview,andawayof thinking.

3.2 ExtrinsicAspectExtrinsicaspectistheaspectthatcomingfromoutsideoftheliteraryworktosupportthecontentofthestory.According toWellekandWarren,"themostwidespreadandflourishing methodsofstudyingliteratureconcernthemselveswithitssetting,itsenvironment,itsexternalcauses."(1949:65).Theyalsoaddthatthereare fourextrinsicapproachesinliterature:LiteratureandBiography,LiteratureandPsychology,LiteratureandSociety,andLiteratureandIdeas.ThisthesisusesLiteratureandPsychologyas thebasisof its extrinsicaspect.TheAnalyticalPsychology theoryby CarlGustavJungisusedinthisthesis,toanalyze themaincharacterofFangirl"spsychologicaltrait.IntheAnalyticalPsychology theory,therearetwotypesofpersonality:ExtrovertandIntrovert.Sommers-FlanaganexplainsthesepersonalitytypesonthebookCounselingandPsychotherapyTheoriesinContextandPractice(2nded.),"Extraversion,anorientationtotheouter worldofpeople,things,andactivities;Introversion,anorientationtothe innerworldofconcepts,ideas,andinternalexperience."(2012:Ch. 3A, 1).Sommers-Flanaganalsostates that:1. Extravertstendtoenjoyinteracting withpeoplefrequently,havemanyfriendsandacquaintances,andareateaseinandenergizedby socialinteractions.Extravertsare practicalandbase theirviewsoftheworldmoreon the day-to-daypracticalities theyexperience.2.Introvertslivemoreintheworldofideasandconcepts.Theyhaveasmallercircleoffriends,enjoyspendingtimealone,andmayfeel

someuneaseinsocialinteractions.Theyrejuvenatewithalonetime,ratherthanbyhangingoutwiththeirbuddies.(2012:Ch. 3A, 12)Thesetwotypesofpersonalitybasicallyhavetheirowndifferencesandtheyarecontradictivewitheach other.Daniels,ashe quotedfromthebookofThe AnalyticalPsychologybyCarlGustavJung,"distinguishedtwogeneralattitudes--introversionandextraversion;and fourfunctions--thinking,feeling,sensing,and intuiting."(2011,7).So,theextraversionandintroversionare thetwogeneralattitudesof psychologicaltypes,andtherearealsothe fourfunctionsforeachattitudes.Thereare fourfunctionswhichwillbeusedtohelptheanalysisonthe main characterof thenovel:1.Introvertedthinkingpersonisinterestednotinfactsbutideas.Mayseem odd.Pays littleattention to relationships with theworld.2.Introvertedfeelingtype:'Stillwatersrundeep"--muchsympathy&understanding ofintimatefriends,orpeoplewhoare suffering.Doesn'tplay roleswell.Noteasilyadaptable.Mayexpressselfinmusic, poetry,religion.3.Introvertedsensingtypes: Mayhavetroubleexpressingthemselves.4.Introvertedintuitive--concernedwiththecollectiveunconscious.Seesvisions,hasrevelationsof religiousorcosmic nature,propheticdreams, etc.(2011: 7).

14

SharpalsoquotesJung"sstatementofintroversion,"Introversion,writesJung,"isnormallycharacterizedby ahesitant,reflective,retiringnature thatkeepsitselftoitself,shrinksfromobjects[and]isalwaysslightlyon the defensive.""(1987: 13).Boereestatesthat"...Introvertsarepeoplewhoprefer their internalworld of thoughts,feelings,fantasies, dreams, andso on, whileextrovertsprefer theexternal worldofthings andpeopleandactivities."(2006: 11)Theintrovertstendtobelieveanddependontheirfeelings,havetheirownfantasies,or simplybeingthoughtful.Boereealsostatesthat:The wordshavebecomeconfusedwithideaslike shynessandsociability,partiallybecauseintrovertstendtobeshyandextrovertstend tobe sociable.ButJungintendedfor themtorefermore towhetheryou("ego")more oftenfacedtowardthepersonaandouterreality,or toward thecollective unconsciousanditsarchetypes.Inthatsense,theintrovertissomewhatmore maturethan theextrovert.(2006: 11)Thismeansthatintrovertsmaylookshierthanextroverts,becausetheyprefer their own thoughts,feelings, orfantasies than facingthe people.
