1. The Manual of Abbreviations Department of

National Defence and the Canadian Forces, A-AD-121- F01/JX-000, is issued on authority of the Chief of Defence Staff. This publication is effective on receipt, and supersedes The Canadian Forces Manual of

Abbreviations dated 2017-03-21, which shall be

destroyed in accordance with the local procedure for destruction of documents.

2. The aim of the Manual of Abbreviations is to give a

list of all abbreviations used in DND/CAF.

3. Unless otherwise specified, the abbreviations listed in

this manual are used by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces, and are applicable in peace and in war.

4. The abbreviations contained in this publication are in

the Defence Terminology Bank (DTB). In case of discrepancies between the content of this publication and of the DTB, the latter has precedence. http://terminologie.mil.ca/

1. Abbreviations are used to save space and time

in communication. They have to be as clear and concise as possible. However, because they may have different meanings depending on the context, they must be used carefully. Where an abbreviation could be misunderstood, the full term should be used.
