Summer Work

I. Reading, Listening & Writing Assignment: Current Events Portfolio This summer, you will create a current events portfolio based on 3 text articles and 3 audio/video reports from French or francophone news sources. These 6 current events must span across the 6 weeks listed below. Please do not choose more than one article or audio/video report per week.

Due Dates:

1. The Current Events Portfolio section of this assignment is due in 2 parts, the first on June

30, and the second August 5 and is worth:

- 30 points in the reading category (10 points per summary, based on completion) - 30 points in the listening category (10 points per summary, based on completion) - 30 points in the writing category (5 points per cultural comparison, graded using AP presentational writing rubric)

2. The four speaking assignments are due during the weeks of June 10-15, June 23-29,

July 21-29, and August 4-10. As long as you submit by the last date of the week indicated, your assignment will be on time. These assignments are worth: -20 points in the speaking category (5 points per assignment, graded using the AP presentational speaking rubric- https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/ap/pdf/ap18-sg- french-language.pdf )

Directions:

1. Choose a current event. Please remember that you will need 3 print sources and 3

audio/visual sources. a. Print Sources: Feel free to access any French or francophone news site, but you may also go to http://fr.w3streams.com/laune to access links to many daily headlines of French and francophone news. The links change daily. b. Audio Sources: Feel free to access any French or francophone audio news site, but here are a few for you as well:

2. Select a news story that relates to one of the main themes or sub-themes of AP French.

You must have 1 for each theme. For each of the 6 entries, be sure to include: -a link for what you watched or read -the title of the article -the date of the article -the theme it represents

3. Read or listen as many times as you need, and look up any unknown words or phrases

using www.wordreference.com .

4. For each current event write a 3-5 sentence French summary of the main ideas using your

own words, and then write a 4-6 sentence cultural comparison in French that compares the article you read to your own personal experiences and culture. Do not use any form of a translator or seek outside help on this task or the speaking task.

Word Reference is the only approved source.

II. Speaking Practice

In addition to submitting your written portfolio, you will also complete 4 small speaking tasks that will take about 1-2 minutes. My Google Voice number is 8181-(813) 388. When you call, just let it go to voice mail and then record your message. For each call, be sure to greet me, say your name, include the message content, and say goodbye. If you can, try not to write out everything you want to say. Just talk. June 10-15 - Introduce yourself, tell me about you (age, likes/dislikes, family, etc.). Also, tell me what you plan to do with your summer. June 23-29 - Tell me how your summer has been going so far. What good movies have you seen or shows have you watched on Netflix? Describe it for me. July 21-29 - Tell me about how the summer work is going for you. How easy/difficult/interesting, etc. are you finding the work? What has been the most interesting thing that you have learned? August 4-10 - What is your best memory of the summer? Describe it. Tell me about what you are and are not looking forward to with the new school year.
