Position Description

Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School is a Latin teacher to join our team as faculty members and continue to

develop one of Philadelphia's most promising educational options for young men and women from families

with limited financial resources. Candidates should have an appreciation of the school's mission and a

commitment to the values of Catholic education. Since the founding of the first school in Chicago in 1996, the

Cristo Rey model has become one of the most innovative and successful educational programs in the nation,

serving over 10,000 students at 32 schools across the country.

The Latin curriculum at Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School is a two-year course of study required for all

students. The posted position is for the first year (Latin 1) wherein students learn the fundamentals of English

grammar, Latin grammar, basic vocabulary, best translation practices, etymology, and Roman history/culture.

Pedagogical methods include traditional grammar-translation as well as comprehensible input/acquisition

practices. The ideal candidate will use total engagement strategies to create a classroom environment of

rigorous learning and participation. Creative projects and engagement with Roman culture are encouraged and

woven into the language study.

With the support of an experienced Latin teacher colleague and grade-level teachers, the ideal candidate will

use the provided materials (annual, unit, and lesson plans) and self-created materials to teach the necessary

benchmarks and ensure all students are prepared for the next year of Latin study. These benchmarks include

English literacy standards as well as Latin language standards. The Latin department does not use a textbook,
