Olympic competition format

Eventing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games comprises the team and individual events, and is made up of the following distinct

tests: dressage, cross-country and jumping. There will also be two official horse inspections to test the health and wellbeing

of the animals. Each test takes place on consecutive days, during which each athlete rides the same horse. The results count towards the

individual and team events. A team consists of three to four horse/rider combinations. The total points are calculated by combining the overall scores of

The tests:

Dressage

This test of compulsory movements evaluates the horse's obedience, flexibility and harmony with the rider. Judges award

points for each exercise, with the total score converted into penalty points that are added to the jumping or time penalties of

the following two days. The dressage test will be the 2008 Olympic Games 4 star B test (short).

Cross country

Each horse/athlete combination attempts to complete the course, which involves up to 45 jumping efforts, within a

The ground jury may reduce course distances, for example in the case of extreme weather conditions.

The height of fixed and solid cross country obstacles may not exceed 1.20m, and the overall height of a natural hedge or

brush fence may not exceed 1.45m. Jumping

This is the final session of the eventing competition and requires competitors to jump 10 to 12 obstacles similar to those in

the jumping event. The test consists of a maximum of 15 jumping efforts and is designed to demonstrate that the horses

The first jumping test will determine the final team classification. This is followed by the final jumping test, in which the 25

best placed athletes, including those who tie for 25th place (with a maximum of three athletes per NOC), compete to

determine the individual classification. The height of the jumps is limited to 1.25m in the first qualifier and 1.30m in the final.

Horse inspections

The first and second horse inspections will be open to the public and will be conducted on a 30-50m tarmac strip in the main

stadium. To be eligible to compete, a horse must undergo two inspections, one on the day prior to the dressage test and a

second before the jumping test.

These two inspections are conducted by the ground jury and the veterinary delegate. In addition, there are two examinations

performed by the veterinarian, the the cross country. Differences between the FEI World Equestrian Games and the Olympic Games

At the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Equestrian Games, the team and individual events are held

concurrently. The winning team (four athletes nominated before the start of the competition) is the one with the lowest total

score (three best scores).

At the Olympic Games, an additional jumping phase will decide the final classification of the eventing individual competition.

Changes since the London 2012 Olympic Games

At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games up to four team members may compete, at London up to five team members were

permitted. The quota for eventing has changed from 75 to 65.

Sport rules and procedures

In the dressage test, each competitor's grade awarded by the judges are converted into penalty points.

In the event of a tie, classification will be decided on the results of:

1. Best overall cross country score.

2. Cross country time closest to the optimum time.

3. Best final jumping score.

4. Best qualifier jumping score.

5. Best time (fastest) in the final jumping.

6. Best total of collective marks in the dressage test.

7. If still equal the tie shall be declared.

Eventing team

In the event of a tie, the winning team will be the one with the best combined highest placings. If they are still tied, the medal

or placing will be shared. Elimination/retirement/withdrawal

If an athlete is eliminated, retires or withdraws from the competition he/she will receive no rank and will be listed at the

bottom of the individual ranking. However, for team classification only, a competitor who fails to complete the competition

will be awarded 1000 points. Disqualification

The ground jury may disqualify a competitor for a number of reasons according to the FEI rules for eventing. In such a case,

the competitor will receive no rank and will be listed at the bottom of the individual ranking. A disqualified competitor will not

count in the team results. Protests/appeals The NOCs may protest or appeal according to the FEI rules.
