In early August, 1812, General Isaac

Brock marched overland from the

Head of the Lake [present-day Hamilton]

to Dover on Lake Erie. He and his men set sail for Amherstberg and took Fort Detroit. The route

Brock took is very nearly approximated

by the current rail-trail network from

Hamilton to Port Dover.

Whether you're biking, jogging or walking,

with more than 125 kilometres of community trails in Kitchener, there is a trail near you to enjoy.

The Iron Horse Trail, a part of the Trans

Canada Trail, runs 5.5 kms between

Ottawa Street in Kitchener and Erb Street

West in Waterloo, providing a scenic and

historic route that links both cities.

Formerly a railway corridor, the trail is the

result of a partnership which saw both cities jointly purchase the abandoned rail line to preserve the corridor and for use as a recreation and transportation trail link.

As well, not far from the hustle and bustle

Discover Kitchener / Waterloo

of the city is the Walter Bean Grand River

Trail - a little piece of paradise where lush

trees tower overhead and the Grand River flows nearby. Running through Waterloo,

Kitchener, Cambridge, Woolwich and North

Dumfries, the trail connects to more than 25

per cent of the Grand River's 290 kms watershed.
