198 II CI,ASSROOM DISPLAY

Ownerts Information

You now have a power{ul tool for teaching with the HP-198II. Your l9BII Classroom Display includes built-in func-

tionality identical to a standard HP-19BII, including 6.4K bytes of continuous user memory. Before you begin using the 19B II Classroom Display, please note the following precautions:

OPERATING PRECAUTIONS

* The 19BII Classroom Display was sent to you in a dark plastic bag which was specially designed to prevent damage from static electricity. Always store and transport the unit in this anti-static bag. * To help prevent damage from static electricity, touch a large metal object such as an overhead projector or a table with your hand before handling the Classroom Dsplay. * T'he Classroom Display unit works well with overhead projectors which use light bulbs up to 360 watts. However, higher wattage bulbs may cause the Classroom Display unit to overheat. Ifyou notice the display darkening and./or the case which contains the display getting too hot to handle comfortably, turn the overhead projector off for a few min- utes to allow the equipment to cool. Leaving the 198II Classroom Displayon an operating overhead projector with a light bulb greater than 360 watts for extended time periods MAY PERMANENTLY DAI\{AGE THE CI"A,SS-

ROOM DISPLAY UNIT.

SETTING T]P

The 19BII Cla"=room Display is shipped from the factory with the keyboard unit disconnected from the display unit. Before using the Classroom Display for the first time, care- fully plug the free end of the flat cable into the row of posts above theright side ofthe keyboard. Note thattheconnector is polarized and will only mate one way. The Classroom Display uses a standard HP-19BII liquid crystal display module which has had its reflective backing removed to allow light from the overhead projector to pass throu gh it. The overhead proj ector enlarge s the image of the display many times, which causes small, normallyinvisible imperfections in the display to become visible in the pro- jected image. This is normal, and does not indicate a mal- function of the Classroom Display. To use the 19BII Classroom Display, place the display unit on a standard overhead projector which uses a 360 watt or smaller light bulb. The cable will allow you to operate the keyboard while facing the class or while turned toward the overhead projection screen. Position the overhead projector far enough from the projec- tion screen toproduce animage thatthe whole classcan see. You may wish to üry more than one overhead projector - some overhead projectors use wide angle lens systems and will produce a larger image. Best viewing results will be obtained if you block the light shining around the display box so that the display image is the only thingthat appears on the screen overhead. Asheet of paper or thin cardberd will work well for this purpose. Dsplay contrast can be a{iusted on the 19BII Classroom Display exactly as it is done on a standard HP-l9BII: while holding the [ON] button, press the [+] key to increase con- trast or the [-] key to decrease contrast.

Included in this packet is a black line art copy of the HP-198II keyboard. By using this artwork to make an overhead

transparency of the keyboard, you will be able to easily illu s - trate the location of items on the HP-l9BII keyboard by u si n g your overhead proj ector. Thi s is useful duri ng the frrs t few days when students are becoming acquainted with the calculator keyboard. The HP 82240 printer can be used with the Classroom Di splay. The infrared LED which transmits to the printer i s located i n si de the di splay uni t about half way from the cable connector to the window, and is pointed toward the right side of the window. You must rest the bottom edge of the

printer on the top surface of the display unit just above theright side of the display window. The printey's infrared

receiver is located behind the smooth panel on the bottom edge near the HP logo. For the printer to work with the Classroom Display, its receiver must be able to "see" the LED inside the display unit thru the display window.

EKAMPI,ES OF USE

All of the built in functions of the standard HP-19BII are available in the 19BII Classroom Dsplay. You mayrefer to the standard HP-l9BII manual for instructions on perform- ing calculations. Ttre examples given here show you how to enter lists of data and assign them names for later reference. These lists can then be recalled for use during classroom demonstrations. The first example shows the histogram of a set of data. Detailed ingtructions for creating histograms and plots are found in chapter 7, pages t47 thru 174, of the HP-19BII Owner's Manual. From the main menu press the [SUM] key to begin creating the example. hess [shift] [CLEAR DATA] and then tWSl to prepare the list for new data.

Enter the following data:

Press TEXIT] asain to return to the SUM

This SUM list will be used again in the next example. To save it for later use it must be given a name. The default name given to a new list is ITEM. To assign the name

YDATA to the list press [NAI\,IE] YDATA IINPUTI.

The second example plots the data from the first example in the form of a graph. A graph plot requires 2 SUM lists to de{ine the 2 dimensional position ofeach data point. The list called YDATAfrom the first example will define the y-axis position of the data points. The x-axis position will be de- fined in the list named XDATA. From the main menu press the ISUMJ key to begin the second example. Press IGETI and then [*NEW] to create

XDATA.

Enter the following items:

1 IINPUT]2 [INPUT]3 IINPUT]4 TINPUT]5 IINPUT]6 TINPUT]7 TINPUT]8 TINPUT]9 IINPUT]10 IINPUT]11 IINPUT]12 TINPUT]

To assign the name XDATA to the new list press INAI\,IEI XDATA IINPUTI. Now, press IGETI and then IYDATA] to make YDATA the current SUM list as required by FRCST.From the SIIM menu press ICALCI IMOREI IFRCSTI IXDATAI to activate the Forecast menu and select XDATA as the x-axis data list. The next prompt is to select the fit model. Press ILINI to select the linear fit. Press IMOREI IPLOTI to see the points in SATA and the linear curve cal' culated to fit the data. These lists will rernain in the memory ofthe HP-19BII when the cable to the keyboard is disconnected as long as the batteries in the Classroom Dsplay have a charge.

SER\IICE INFORIUATION

Startingin April 1990, 19BII Classroom Display units have their batteries located inside the display unit rather than in the battery compartment of the keyboard unit (the battery

compartrnent in the keyboard unit is le{t empty). Three N-cell alkaline batteries are used. To gain access to the

batteries, use a small allen wrench to remove the four screws on the sides of the display unit. Slide or lift the cover off. When replacing batteries, note the polarity indications embossed in the battery holders; be sure to orient the new batteries accordingly. When reassembling the unit, place it on aflat surface, start the four screws, and then press down on the tid to ensure that all four feet are contacting the surface while tightening the screws. This will ensure that the unit will sit flat on the proj ector without rocking. Please refer to the HP-l9BII Owner's Manual Appendix d pages 267 thru 284, for information about environmental limits, battery life, self tests, and answers to common ques- tions about the HP-19BII itself.
