USA - ASTM INTERNATIONAL HAS REVISED

ITS STANDARD FOR TEXTILE CARE LABELLING

SYMBOLS

The American Society for Testing and Materials (

ASTM )

has recently issued an update of the US Standard Guide for Care Symbols and Care Instructions on Textile

Products: ASTM D5489

-18.

LEGAL PRINCIPLES OF CARE LABELLING IN

THE US

In the United States of America, care labelling falls under a specic law ( law 16 CRF Part 423 ). This law denes the basis of care labelling and refers, among others, to US-Norm D5489 that regulates care symbols.

According to the law's wording, both care symbols

and written care instructions are permitted ( each, however should stand alone ), as long as they meet the require- ments of the law. This means that the care symbols may be used without any additional text. However, if consumers need particular instructions on how to successfully clean specic textiles, this information needs to be provided additionally.

ASTM CARE LABELLING SYMBOLS (

STANDARD

ASTM D5489-18

) AMENDED

The D5489 standard illustrating the care symbols,

has now been amended. The updated version of the US ASTM D5489-standard 18 is now available for pur- chase and can be downloaded from this link: www. astm. org / Standards / D5489. For copyright reasons,

GINETEX cannot deliver this standard. Please note

that these US care symbols are different from the known GINETEX care symbols based on the ISO 3758
: 2012 standard. The new standard includes an explanation on the specic scope in which the sym- bols can be used on the U.S. market. The symbols of this new standard version may be used in addition to full care instructions that need to be writ- ten in English. If no written care instructions are dis- closed, the ASTM D5489 - 96c version of textile care symbols must be used.

CHANGES IN THE US STANDARD - ASTM D5489-18

Compared to the previous version (

D5489-96c ) the mod-

ied ASTM D5489 -18 standard now features the follow- ing modications concerning Professional Cleaning: The A in the circle that stood for "any solvent" is no longer used

Symbols for wet cleaning ( a W in a circle ) have

been added and this information about wet cleaning is optional. If no wet cleaning symbol appears it means that for this specic textile, no tests have been conducted for wet cleaning. In this case, a symbol for dry cleaning has to ap- pear ( circle with P or F ). On the other hand, the

W in the circle cannot be shown alone, but can

appear in addition to other symbols.

A bottom line provides information on mild pro-

fessional cleaning.

COMPARING ASTM AND GINETEX SYMBOLS

- The US symbols differ from the GINETEX sym- bols in terms of graphics and also sometimes in terms of content. — The main differences lie in temperature indica- tions: dots in the wash tub, different symbols for natural drying, a black crossed out triangle for “do not bleach“.

— If you export to the USA, both ASTM symbols

and GINETEX symbols ( ISO 3758 : 2012 ) can appear on the same care label. — In both US-system and ISO-system, at least 5 symbols have to appear in a row, in the following order: Washing - Bleaching - Drying - Ironing -

Professional Care.

— One cannot compare the GINETEX symbols

ISO 3758 : 2012 standard ) with the US symbols

ASTM D5489-18 standard ) in detail, because the

US system is in fact similar to GINETEX's, al-

though they are not at all related.

CLEVERCARE ON LABELS

WITHDRAWING OF THE CANADIAN STANDARD

FOR TEXTILE CARE LABELLING

Last October, the Canadian government withdrew its national voluntary standard CAN / CGSB-86.1-2003, considering that its contents may no longer represent the most current, reliable and / or available information on the subject. For care instructions and symbols on their textile labels, companies can now refer either to

ASTM D5489 standard or to ISO 3758:2012 standard

GINETEX symbols.

Over the past months, multinational retailers and small to medium and large apparel companies from all over the world (

China, Japan, Spain, United States, Australia,

etc. ) have chosen to use GINETEX's care labelling symbols based on the ISO 3758 : 2012 standard, to communicate their care instructions to their consumers. Our ISO 3758 standard is starting to be well recog- nized throughout the world. GINETEX works closely with its licensees in order to provide them with all the relevant support they may need to answer the prere quisites of national regulations for their targeted ex- port markets.

GLOBAL USER UPDATE

On June 5th, 2018, APPLIA, A.I.S.E. and GINETEX

joined to publish a list of tips to help consumers de- crease their energetic footprint when doing their laun- dry, on a day-to-day basis. The set of tips includes the optimal use of a washing machine or laundry detergent while keeping our fa- vourite clothes as new. It all starts with the need to keep and read the labels on which the care instruc- tions appear, through a set of 5 to 7 symbols. These are deliberately printed by the brands to fully inform their consumers. “By changing our day-to-day habits just a little and by following these easy to use tips, each one of us will be able to have a direct, positive impact on the envi- ronment. In doing so, we will also help to increase our textiles' lifespan and save money. This common initia- tive between A.I.S.E., APPLiA and GINETEX, on a European level, demonstrates the importance of join- ing our efforts to achieve sustainable textile laundry - for the benet of our common consumers, our brand members and our planet!" said Adam Mansell, Presi- dent of GINETEX.

Each year, the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (

SAC ) gathers its members and creates an opportunity for them to discuss their on-going projects, share sustain- ability best practices, voice their opinions, and follow up on collaborative developments around SAC initia- tives and projects. This year, over 320 people from 168 different organisa- tions gathered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, for SAC's 2018 Full Member Meeting. Jason Kibbey, CEO of SAC, shared the following from his keynotes: “Sustainability isn't something that we're just becom- ing aware of, it's not just something that's growing. It's something that companies are now integrating at scale. I know everyone in this room is up to meeting that challenge, and we at the SAC are committed to helping you to do so."

As member, GINETEX attended the meeting and

met with Sustainability directors and managers from major retailers and apparel brands ( many of which are

GINETEX global users ). The members' support and

commitment around sustainability ( on-going work and projects ) and SAC's initiatives were all impressive.

High-level speakers and experts discussed many

subjects among which: improving the sustainability of the apparel industry's supply chain, recycling of bres textiles, the issue of micro-plastics etc. SAC's major Higg Index project was also fully covered and discussed. The aim of this remarkable project is to make all sus- tainability efforts and gains measurable, throughout the complete supply chain: from production to point of sale. Major retailers and apparel brands are part of this project and will soon fully benet from it.
