The Gauss Math Test

The Gauss Math test is a test specifically designed for Grade 7 students, and selected grade 6 students, to see if

they can answer correctly a number of math problems that increase in difficulty as the test goes on. The test is

very difficult and is conducted nation-wide. The Burnaby School District has a long history of students writing it.

The Abel Math test is another challenge Math Test that students in grade 5 (and selected grade 4 and 3 students)

also write. The top score possible is 150 for the Gauss Test and 25 for the Abel. Here is a list of the results for

this year"s tests. Congratulations to all those who were selected by their teachers to write and a special commenda-

tion to those who were the top finishers this year! A huge thank you to Mr. Morrison for organizing the contest!!! Nelson Track 2016

Our Nelson track season is now complete. Our Nelson runners practiced on Monday, Wednes- day and Friday mornings before school. There were also 4 track meets where students had the opportunity to run in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter distances. The students also participat- ed in the all- day "Big Schools" Awards Meet on Thursday, May 5th at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. It was a lovely day for running and our student-athletes again put in amazing perfor- mances in both individual events and relays. Our school managed to have 7 teams qualify for the relay finals which in itself is a big accomplishment. Of those relay teams, 5 teams finished in the top 3. Our runners all tried their best, trained hard and represented Nelson well. We hope all athletes continue running and competing. We also hope they continue enjoying the ben- efits running can bring, both physically and emotionally. Many memories were made. A big thank you to all of our parent volunteer drivers! Without your help our season would not have been possible. Go Nelson! The following runners participated in the all- day track meet. If stu- dents received a ribbon we did our best to note it.

What is "I Love Water Polo"?

"I Love Water Polo" (ILWP) is Water Polo Canada"s introductory, grass roots water polo program for boys and girls ages 8-12 (although easily adaptable for younger or older age groups, or even adults). In a learn-to-play environment, similar to swimming lessons, participants discover the game of water polo, and the basic skills involved in aquatic sports. The ILWP program also helps to enhance the par- ticipants swimming, balance, and coordination skills. No prior water polo experi- ence is required. The only pre-requisite is that participants should be able to swim one width of the pool.

2016 Little League Canadian Championship Tournament

Hastings Community Little League is hosting the 2016 Little League Canadian Champion- ship tournament at Hastings Park this summer from August 4 to 13, 2016.
As tournament host, the League will arrange billeting for some of the visiting players from across Canada. This is done to provide good quality accommodations for the players and to reduce tournament expenses for the families of the teams. Players must be billeted in pairs and each requires a separate bed. We are reaching out to anyone that might be interested in billeting tournament players. If

Fourth Annual Hats Off Day Family Fun Dash

Saturday, June 4th

Tell your kids to lace up their shoes and get ready to "dash" down Hastings

Street!

With Hastings Street closed, children will "dash" down the wide-open street to collect their finisher ribbons. Participation in this event counts towards school physi- cal education requirements. Presented by the Heights Merchants Association and sponsored by Chevron and Sco- tiabank, this 550m dash kicks off the Hats Off Day event and celebrates how Burna- by Heights embraces health, wellness, families and fun. Registration is open to all children over the age of 2. Each participant is required to have a team captain (over the age of 13), to accompany them in the run. Each team captain can accompany up to four children, and is responsible for ensuring all their team participants cross the finish line. $5 entry fee per participant (no fee for the team captain): proceeds go to the Burna- by Fire Fighters Charitable Society

Don"t delay - sign up today!

Registration is limited.

No day-of registration.

For REGISTRATION and more information, please visit: www.hatsoffday.com/family-fun-dash Join the Summer Reading Club at Burnaby Public Library! Children who read over the summer do better in school, and libraries across BC are here to help. When kids sign up for a Summer Reading Club, they receive a reading calendar, a reading record, a book mark and stickers.

By reading for just 15 minutes a day for 50

days, readers will be rewarded with the highly coveted Summer Reading Club medal. Regis- tration starts Monday, June 13th and continues until the middle of July. PLUS: During the summer, the library offers fun and creative programs, extended loans for travelers, and book recommendations

FAQs: Can my child

register if we"re not here in the summer? Yes. Registration materi- als can be picked up at the beginning of the summer and reading can be done anywhere. Medals will be available until the end of September. What if my child isn"t reading yet? Children of all ages and reading levels are welcome. Younger children can listen to stories, and we have books and suggestions to help beginners too. We love matching kids with books!quotesdbs_dbs46.pdfusesText_46
