The Circus

Village

Ladies and

gentlemen,

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the

modern circus invented by Astley, an

Englishman from Newcastle under Lyme, The

Circus Village is coming to Îlot Chapiteau with the very best of contemporary British circus three big tops and a pub/café create an amazing venue - a bit like an English garden peopled with madcap characters. The five companies from Northern Ireland, England and Wales bear witness to the rich contemporary circus aesthetics to be found in the United Kingdom elegant choreography and minimalism in some cases, weird and wacky humour and total eccentricity in others. For all these companies, the worlds they create and the techniques they employ are deeply embedded in traditions dating back 250 years, infected by the sounds and colours of British culture and take from British. A quintessentially British programme of performances offering the perfect treat the poetry, rock-and-roll attitude and charm of our neighbours from the other side of the channel, in a shaded garden with tea and cake to boot.

Spotlight UK

Circus

Spotlight UK Circus is an initiative from NoFit

State Circus and Crying Out Loud and funded

by the Arts Council England International

Showcasing Fund.

Over the last 30 years circus has moved into the

heart of British cultural life, and over the last 10 years the number and quality of new productions developed in the United Kingdom has increased significantly. The country now boasts a huge variety of artists and companies poised to join the international scene. Spotlight UK Circus was launched to enable British companies to present their work at three leading festivals within the circus world in Europe: Circa festival de cirque actuel in Auch, France (20 29

October 2017), Subcase Subtopia Circus Fair in

Stockholm, Sweden (14 17 November 2017) and

The Circus Village at the Avignon Festival OFF (6

29 July 2018). The showcase has been designed to

shine a spotlight on contemporary British circus on the international stage, offer artists the tools they need to promote and position themselves in the international market, provide an opportunity for audiences to discover the best of British contemporary circus, and for artists to gain international visibility and benefit from the cross- fertilisation that comes with comparing their practices with those of artists from other places. Inhabited by wild energy and accompanied by a band of live musicians playing a mixture of rock ballads, new production is full of surprises; an ambitious performance which plays mischievously with the borders between traditional and contemporary circus.

Full of surprises, tenderness and joie de vivre.

NoFit State Circus

NoFit State was founded in Wales in 1986 by five friends. In these politically charged times with the country in recession and under the Thatcher regime the company was born as a response to the world around it. Since that time, NoFit State has played an iconic role in the development of contemporary circus in the United Kingdom. Six years after their storming success at the Avignon Festival Off with Tabù, the Welsh are once more laying down the silver space ship at Barthelasse Island with their latest show and a new challenge to present their own work alongside four young companies at the cutting edge of

British contemporary circus.

July 3 pm (70 minutes)

Full Price: 14 euros / Subscriber: 10 euros / Child: 8 euros Unsuitable, a wacky ensemble with bone-dry Irish humour, puts a gang of abrasive characters on stage and asks ultra-serious questions about gender, race, identity and humour. Midway between circus comedy and the poetry of movement, against a backdrop of juggling, aerial acrobatics, tightrope walking and clowns, feats of circus ability become a pretext to make the audience both laugh and think.

Tumble Circus

Tumble Circus has deep roots in Northern Ireland and is now home to internationally renowned artists from Great Britain, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and Australia. Their work bears all the stamp of a determination to produce a circus in their own image, a circus steeped in the political and cultural history of the city and beyond, a circus that makes you want to pursue your desires.

Full Price: 14 euros / Subscriber: 10 euros / Child: 8 euros Knot is an acrobatic pas de deux about the search for a significant partner. As the two performers execute athletic lifts, balances and sinewy choreography, their voices share the romantic dreams, falsehoods and confusion that underpin their complex relationship. Equally funny and heart-breaking, Nikki & JD reveal the raw underbelly of their friendship with an effortless balance between spectacle and intimacy.

Nikki & JD

Nikki & JD add techniques taken from gymnastics, capoeira and contemporary dance to their circus skills. From the outset they have always enjoyed playing with different codes and offering performances which combine dance, acrobatics and storytelling.

Spellbinding! the very forefront of the circus revolution in the United Kingdom, dreams up forms of aerial writing where circus merges with visual theatre and dance to offer moving, original performances which cast a wondering eye on humans and their relationships with each other and the world that surrounds them.

With a catastrophic chain of meticulously choreographed tumbles to live music, Flown is wonderfully bonkers circus to enjoy with friends or family.

Pirates of the Carabina (POC) are known for their uniquely inventive and quirky approach to the codes of circus. They specialise in creating highly technical circus performances in which live music plays a very big role.
